WHO WOULDN’T WANT to play catch — or even juggle — with a robot while you are walking through an amusement park?
Disney’s research group in Pittsburgh recently released this video showing their progress on just such a juggling robot. It’s pretty creepy.
Here’s their reasoning, from the YouTube video:
Entertainment robots in theme park environments typically do not allow for physical interaction and contact with guests. However, catching and throwing back objects is one form of physical engagement that still maintains a safe distance between the robot and participants. Using a theme park type animatronic humanoid robot, we developed a test bed for a throwing and catching game scenario.
The system uses an external camera to track the balls, and they’ve even developed gestures for the robot if it misses the ball — catch them in the video below:

@Tyrone Williams: My son attends a special needs school where a lot of the children have medical conditions that mean they have low immune systems. We get the flu jab every year in case our son was to contract it and give it to his more vulnerable school mates. To give you some context last year a kid in the school was in intensive care for weeks after contracting an infection. I also have a six year old niece who is undergoing chemotherapy at the moment and who is vulnerable. So when I see people comparing this to a cold it boils my blood. Cop yourself on.

@Breedge: well the fact that its same day testing I would presume it’s not instant and therefore if one presents for a test let’s say anywhere between 8am and 4 PM (presumably this would mostly happen early) then maybe 8 or 10 hours is how long a result takes to appear on a test, but then also has to go through the channels before it meets the public media. Very simple to work out
@hellsbells: the test to confirm the virus takes several hours to run. Samples received in the morning are reported in the evening. Samples received in the afternoon are reported next day. The national virus reference laboratory are doing Trojan work.

@Pharmy: well said people are quick to pass judgement with absolutely no knowledge of the work involved. The NVRL got the COVID-19 test up and running in super quick time so that we can test in Ireland rather than sending samples to the UK before we had any positives detected here.

We have upto 5000 Italians arriving on Friday into Dublin, the game on Saturday is cancelled but there still coming as they paid for there flights and hotels well in advance. The majority of Italian rugby fans come from northern Italy. We will have similar numbers of Covid-19 after this weekend to the uk. We have to cancel these flights from northern Italy ASAP.
@Alan Martin: first of all, its 2500 italians due to travel. Secondly, Ryanair has said huge numbers in Italy are not showing up for flights, so maybe they wont all come. Now, I’m not saying the flights shouldn’t be restricted but it might not be as much as you say.

What concerns me is that our health authorities seem to be saying the risk of an epidemic is still very low while the UK Department of Health and the Prime Minister say an epidemic is to be expected.
Are we burying our heads in the sand? Are we being given solid, reliable information?

Well I won’t say I told them so. They only listen to the experts and fail to listen to common sense. We need to ban all flights from affected areas immediately if not done yet. Then we need to appeal to people to get tested because there are more out there. People need to go into avoidance mode. Large gatherings need to be cancelled. We need proactive action fast.

@Laro Alba: these 4 people were on a flight with another case, and were contacted by the HSE. The system is working in that sense. I’m assuming they had self isolated since hse contacted them.

There is loads of human contact for vital imports. If other countries lock down their production and distribution centres there won’t be anything to import.
If we can’t export, Irish factories shut down. Farming shuts down. No bread, milk, meat or other foodstuffs on the shelves
No medicines, no medical supplies, no disinfectants, no chance of controlling the virus.
People lose their jobs. After 3 or 4 months they are in arrears on mortgage payments, car payments and other loans.
Shutting down the country is a very very bad idea.

If people had been to the affected areas I would have assumed everyone there should be in quarantine for 14 days before coming back. Same as in that hotel in Tenerife.

He said when Google sent 8000 staff home for 2 days it caused enormous damage to 30 companies that feed the Google staff and had lost money. He also stated that our GDP would fall off a cliff and people would die because of that if we pull up the draw bridge and close the country down to slow down the spread of the virus. What the hell is a medical man doing discussing the economic impact of the Coronavirus when that would be someone else’s job. It illustrates my point that vested interests have taken over the entire decision making process in relation to public health policy when it comes to the coronavirus.

Anyone coming from a country that is infected needs to fill in a form with contact information then self isolate for two weeks. If they are showing symptoms escorted to hospital or house depending on severity. Or check temperature or swab all people coming from an infected area. WHO should set guidelines for this for every country think it would contain it quicker

This really is so easy to keep out. Mandartory health checks for all passengers arriving on flights from Italy for a limited time. Any passenger arriving in Ireland that has been in Italy, South Korea, Iran or South Korea should have delcare this on arrival and face a mandatory screening. Implement some emergency legislation and fine those that don’t heavily if they bring the disease into the country.
The current approach of do nothing will fail spectacuraly and people will die!
They should supply test swabs to everyone so they can isolate those who have this before it spreads out of control…and so there lives can be saved by getting treatment.

The people that propose a travel ban haven’t thought it out. It’s clear to say that the spread of covid-19 is inevitable no matter what countries we implement a travel ban on if you looked at the news you would know it’s too late for that nonsense it didn’t work for any country why would it work now.
