Man saves work friend... by falling on him

Martin Amriding fell on top of his friend Kevin Brockbank who was falling to floor with cardiac arrest – and it restarted his heart.

THIS IS SURELY going to be on the list of most unusual lifesaving techniques of 2012: The man who fell on his friend and restarted his heart.

The Daily Mail reported yesterday on the story of Kevin Brockbank, 54, who suffered a heart attack at work. His friend Martin Amriding went to catch Brockbank as he slid to the floor, but instead landed on top of him. The weight of Amriding – he weighs 15 stone – restarted Brockbank’s heart.

Brockbank went on to suffer further cardiac arrests in the ambulance on the way to the hospital but has since recovered after surgery.

Both men work together at a printing press company in Dundee, Scotland but Brockbank’s near-death experience has made headlines worldwide since yesterday. The Daily Telegraph republished the story today while it has also travelled as far as Vietnamese and  Portugese press.

why all commenters assume the 15 stone guy was fat, could be muscular or a big built guy, those hearing big and assuming fat should question their process for basing assumptions off

Leave it out, jumpthecat! He had heart surgery afer being admitted to Casualty. They don’t give you heart surgery for just fainting.

Or maybe the guy having the heart attack fainted, rather than his heart stopping.
There is no way of knowing that this guy’s heart had actually stopped when he collapsed with his heart attack. If there was no pulse check (or monitoring) before his friend fell on him, how is it possible to tell whether he was in cardiac arrest?
Sensationalist article – would expect no less from the Daily Mail. This is worse than that sh*** about ‘Cough CPR’ that was doing the rounds a few years back.

Tom, do you think the fact the patient arrested in the back of the ambulance is coincidental to the man ‘fainting’

@Relevent – I am not disputing the fact that he had a cardiac arrest in the ambulance. I am disputing the claim that someone falling on the patient sorted out what the reporter has assumed was a cardiac arrest. He was undoubtedly having a heart attack and we know that he arrested later. I’m simply saying he most likely had a syncope/faint/blackout at the scene and the Daily Mail has decided to sensationalise the fact that he came around after a man fell on him. Last time I checked, falling on someone isn’t the way to cure a cardiac arrest. The precordial thump has been removed from most modern BLS algorithms.

The friend tripped while he was trying to catch him and fell on top of him (paragraph 3).

He had a couple of heart attacks in the ambulance on the way to hospital and then had heart surgery. Really doesn’t sound like either of them fainted tbh.

Mary, I’d say the heart attack woulda made him faint ;-) Don’t people usually collapse with it. It does sound silly that falling on someone would fix a cardiac arrest. BTW ‘cardiac arrest’ isn’t the same as heart attack! I reckon the whole thing was one big heart attack!

“Went on to have further heart attacks in the ambulance” Do you mean he went on to have further Cardiac Arrests in the ambulance? A heart attack and a cardiac arrest are not the same thing

Yes my dad witnessed the arrest and by falling on him and him coming round we can assume the man was in VF (ventricular fibrillation) a ambulance would shock someone in this rhythm. Yes the man had a further 3 arrests in the ambulance this is common with heart attacks
