€240,000 of herbal cannabis seized in Carlow

The plants were seized at a house in Old Burrin in Carlow town earlier today.

GARDAÍ HAVE SEIZED €240,000 worth of cannabis in the Carlow area as part of their ongoing investigation into the cultivation of cannabis in Ireland.

The seizure took place at a house in Old Burrin in Carlow town with approximately 300 cannabis plants at various stages of growth seized.

Gardaí estimate the plants would have a street value of €240,000 pending analysis.

A technical examination of the scene where the plants were seized is under way and enquiries are ongoing, gardaí add.

It hasn’t happened yet. Same Ireland as I have known in about 30 years.

Smokers smoke, drinkers drink. My oul fella won’t be running in to buy any if it becomes legal.

And I can’t accept an argument about “the kids” as they can get it easier than anyone as it is.

I don’t care if they do or they don’t, I’ll be ok.

Ok Seamus, here’s a little bit of maths for you.

If we take this as an average grow operation and assume that you can get an average of 1 ounce from each plant (a fairly substantial under estimate if they are grown properly) and the fact that on average about 10% of drugs are actually seized by officials anywhere in the world it totals up something like this.

    300 ounces x 400 grow houses a year average located by Gardai x 10 = 1,200,000 ounces

Now 1 metric ton = 32,000 ounces so that is -

    1,200,000 / 32,000 = 37 tonnes

That is a huge amount of cannabis.

Ok I’ve informed by a family member that there are in fact 35,274 oz in a ton. Apparently there are 32,000 FLUID ounces in an American tonne. Those crazy Americans weighing liquid.

So we have to lower our original total.

    1,200,000 / 35,274 = 34.019 tons

Not much of a difference. I think the point still stands.

The point will always still stand on the basis that supply has never went away. I’ve seen small time bags sold across the country and the price doesn’t go up, quality doesn’t go down.

Cannabis never goes away because the gardai lost years ago.
