1. #RIP: Irish climber Ian McKeever has died suddenly while travelling up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is believed the well known adventurer was struck by lightning in a storm earlier today.
2. #CATHERINE GOWING: The funeral of murdered Irish woman Catherine Gowing is due to take place today in her home county Offaly. The 37-year-old’s remains were recovered in Wales last October after she went missing and the man charged with her murder is due to appear in court this month.
3. #ARREST: Police in Northern Ireland investigating the murder of Jason McGovern on Sunday have arrested two men in connection with his death. The 19-year-old from Monaghan died from head injuries after two attacks on a night out in Omagh.
4. #PENSIONERS: Eircom has warned pensioners they could face an increase in their phone bills of up to €18.59 a month due to the reduction of government subsidies for phone services, The Irish Times reports. The service provider said it is working with telecoms regulator ComReg to design a new subsidy that would be made available to its most vulnerable customers.
5. #SEX OFFENDERS: Minister Alan Shatter is due to bring forward a proposal to electronically tag sex offenders when they are released from prison, The Irish Daily Mirror reports. While in opposition, Shatter pledged to introduce the measures within a year of taking office.
6. #POISONING: Some 30,000 homes may be at risk of lead poisoning from their drinking water as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned four county councils about pipes dating back to Victorian times, the Irish Examiner reports. The warning comes as the implementation of Europe-wide lead limits approaches.
7. #SHOOTING: Three people have been killed and two others injured in a shooting in Switzerland, AFP reports. The gunman, who had reportedly been drinking heavily before the attack, was armed with an assault rifle and was injured in an exchange of fire with police.
8. #INDIA: Five men will stand accused of the kidnapping, rape and murder of a young female student in India who died at the weekend from the injuries she sustained during the attack. The men, mostly residents of New Delhi slums, will face the death penalty if convicted.
9. #PAKISTAN: Officials in Pakistan have said two US drones have killed 13 people including senior militant leader Mullah Nazir, AP reports. Nazir’s death could be a contentious issue between Washington and Islamabad which is believed to have agreed a non-aggression pact with the militant in 2009.
