Distribution firm Johnson Brothers to cut 83 jobs in Dublin

The company informed staff of the decision to outsource its warehouse and transport operations today.

DISTRIBUTION FIRM JOHNSON Brothers has announced that it is making 83 employees at its plant in west Dublin redundant.

Management called employees to a meeting this afternoon to inform them of a “significant development within the company” with new arrangements necessitating the loss of 83 jobs in its warehouse and transport operations.

This function within the company is being outsourced to an external provider with the company’s 200 other staff not affected by the announcement.

Johnson Brothers is a sales and marketing, merchandising distribution and logistics provider based in Ballymount in west Dublin. It has been in operation since 1893.

The company said today that it expected its workforce to be reduced to 200 from 283 by the end of this month.

“Discussions with employee representatives are to commence immediately,” the company added in a statement.

Sounds a lot like the company i work for. End of year profits best for years, beaten all sales targets, but cutting staff by 50% not because we are or ever look like dropping profits but because when the factories in Thailand northern india and poland are not on strike over poor pay and conditions they can produce slightly cheaper than we can. We are but a number my friends.

Surely TUPE (transfer of undertakings) legislation would apply under these circumstances….. Hope the staff get some good legal representation and fight their corner

The problem with transport & logistics in this country is we cant compete with our european counterparts. Too much regulation & costs are too high. We may get used to this as many of these companies are now moving to eastern Europe. Same job being done for less money.
