UPDATE: Woman dies after being hit by car in Dublin city centre

The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, has been arrested.

TWO PEDESTRIANS WERE injured, one fatally, in a road traffic incident on Abbey Street in Dublin city centre close to the Jervis Luas stop today.

The man and woman were injured when they were struck by a car shortly before 1.00pm.

Both were taken to the Mater Hospital where the woman, aged in her 50s, was later pronounced dead. The man is believed to have suffered leg injuries.

The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was arrested under the Road Traffic Act at the scene and is detained at Store Street Garda Station.

The area was sealed off and the road was closed for a number of hours to facilitate a forensic collision investigation of the scene. However Middle Abbey Street has now re-opened and Red Line Luas services have been restored.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them at Store Street Garda station on 01 666 8000.

The Journal should move their ‘Thumbs up/down’ from the right hand side. There’s no way anyone could give this comment a thumbs down. I reckon people are hitting the thumbs as they scroll down (I’ve done it) and it’s very annoying.

The mentality of people in Dublin is the same as those anywhere else in the country, they cant live without their cars. You’re probably more likely to come across some nutter with a failed driving test here then you are on some country road.

Think you’re right, private cars are required to turn left into lower Liffey street just before upper Abbey street starts, so this car shouldn’t be there in the first place. And the fact driver was arrested too probably tells a bit too… RIP.

There are multi story carparks in the area that should have been closed or not allowed in the first place. Having car traffic in this part of the city is completely incompatible with the Luas as well as cyclists and pedestrians. Nothing will be done about this as money usually has a higher priority than lives.

This is awful news to hear. Rip to that lady and I hope the gentleman makes a full recovery. I know that cars are allowed on that street to get to the back entrance of jervis. anyone that knows that street knows that you’d seldom get above 5mph along there. I’d say there will be plenty of witnesses as it was right beside the busy Luas stop.
