The 9 at 9 Good morning. Here are the nine stories you need to know as you start your day.

EVERY MORNING,TheJournal.ie brings you the nine stories you need to know as you kick off your day.

1. #SHOOTING: A 19-year-old man remains in garda custody this morning in connection with the shooting of an 18-year-old man at Memorial Park in Dublin yesterday. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the shooting to come forward.

2. #CROKE PARK: Talks between public sector unions and the government are due to begin today on an extension of the Croke Park Agreement. The government will be seeking changes in pay, pensions and working conditions and unions say any deal made will have to go to a ballot.

3. #COUNSELLING: Cutbacks by the Department of Education and Skills has led to a 51 per cent reduction in the time available for one-to-one counselling in schools, an independent report has found. The study found that schools have been forced to divert guidance counsellors to more classroom based duties.

4. #ELDERLY: The government has reversed its decision to cut funding for  personal alarms for the elderly, RTE reports. The decision to halve the spending in order to make a saving of €1.3 million was strongly criticised last week by organisations representing older people.

5. #ROADS: Up to three cars have been involved in a collision on the M1 in Dublin this morning. The incident has been described as ‘minor’ and gardaí are at the scene but motorists may be affected by some delays.

6. #PATRONAGE: A huge online survey by the Department of Education will today begin asking parents who should run primary schools in their area. Currently around 96 per cent of primary schools are run by a church, with almost all falling under the remit of the Catholic Church.

7. #GREECE: Shots were fired at the headquarters of the main Greek ruling party in Athens this morning with one bullet smashing through the window of the office of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. This follows several incidents of arson in the last week targeting New Democracy party offices and journalists.

8. #SYRIA: A new report by an aid agency has described rape as a “significant and disturbing feature of the Syrian civil war”. It is now estimated that theere are more than 600,000 Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries and North Africa.

9. #GOLDEN GLOBES: The stars were in fine form at this year’s Golden Globes with Ben Affleck’s thriller Argo sweeping the awards, winning Best Drama and Best Director. Les Miserables also did well, claiming Best Musical or Comedy, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler went down a treat, but Jodie Foster stole the show with this emotional speech…

My life is fine. What’s your point exactly? 35 years protesting is a waste of time – what did she accomplish?
Like that moron in India who has held his hand in the air for the last 30 years – it’s stupid.

Maybe you just don’t know what it is like to stand for something. It may have been futile but I’m sure everyone who has stood for something has been told by cynics like you that it was a waste of time or futile. Ma

You’re confused Allen. You seem to be implying I said something I didn’t.

I never said you shouldn’t stand up for what you believe.
I never said people shouldn’t protest.
I never said protests don’t work.
    I never questioned her integrity.

You get 1 life – hers is over now, and she spent 35 years of it doing this. And for what? It’s a sad existence – she wasted almost half her life IMO.

I don;’t disagree with you, Larissa – but it’s possible you’re confused too, like Allen.

I never claimed to know whether she considered her life wasted or not. It’s possible that you don’t know what “IMO” means, which was at the end of my last post. It means’ in MY opinion’ – I never claimed to know her opinion.

Neil thats pretty narrow minded. Is life based entirely on accomplisments? Maybe she met a lot of people, saw a lot of interesting things, felt very fulfilled and at peace with herself for doing something she thought was right. Saying that, what she did is stupid is a pretty stupid thing to say and it may be a waste of time for you cause you hold different values. She died and the fact you read an article about her over 3000 miles away and a lot of people seem to care that she died is an accomplishment in itself. That may be more that will be said about u when you die. RIP

here we go again so dont make presumptions, dont have an opinion, Neil did not refer to her as considering her life was wasted or not, but it is his option that it was, and he is entitled to ,express it, it not another judging or hate phobia crime for you to police, For what its worth i think it was wasted, i assume you have the same option on priests and other practitioners of organised religion, you express them freely enough, without others lecturing you on your presumptions

Huge Respect, The hypocrisy of US Foreign Policy is A Nuclear weapon in the hands of an Ally is a “deterrent” yet in the hands of an advisory is reason enough to invade. If only more had the same courage as this Lady, the world would be a far less hostile place. Similarly Middle Eastern States which are resourceful and have dictatorships are deemed inhumane and in need of Democratic overthrows, whilst other stronger and perhaps even more inhumane Middle Eastern States whom ally with US policy are deemed progressive and an ally. Donald Trump’s ascension in my opinion is the best thing to happen to this world, because he has brought to the masses the lunacy of continuing to abide to US Foreign Policy. I Love America and its people, just not its batshit foreign policy. Hope for humanity’s sake Bernie Sanders wins the next election and restores some form of sense to this ever changing fragile world of ours.

“She manned the White House antinuclear peace vigil the longest. She stayed there through thick and thin and was dedicated to a cause that sometimes seemed to be like an unhealthy relationship.””

So even according to her own best advocates she was basically nuts. This is the story of a mentally ill woman who should have gotten help but didn’t, because she was an immigrant and instead of a family to look out for her all she had was a bunch of anti-nuclear fantasists. Very sad. RIP.
