Viable explosive device made safe in Limerick

The device was made safe without the need for a controlled explosion.

AN ARMY BOMB Disposal Team made safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Limerick City this afternoon.

The Defence Forces deployed to Cecil Street, Limerick City following a request from the gardaí; the area had been cordoned off and local residents were evacuated to a safe location.

The team arrived on scene at 11.25am and examined the IED which was located in an apartment complex following a Garda Operation. The device was made safe in situ without the need for a controlled explosion. It was then removed to a secure location for further technical examination.

The remains of the device will be handed over to the gardaí to assist with their investigations.

The scene was declared safe at 12.10pm.

This is the thirteenth viable IED dealt with by the Bomb Disposal Team so far this year in eleven call outs.

What a relaxed and inspirational kid. Grand to see him at the piano, and he can sing too. Look mam, hands!

Wonderful brace child. I hope he continues to go from strength to strength. The bravery and selflessness of the parents who donated their child’s hands is outstanding. I think that must be harder to do than to donate organs somehow.
