SIPTU REPRESENTATIVES WILL attend the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) today to discuss how to maximise the retention of jobs at Johnson Brothers in Ballymount, Dublin.
The sales and marketing, merchandising, distribution and logistics provider currently employs 283 people in Dublin.
On 4 January, management at the company called employees into a meeting to inform them that 83 jobs would be lost in its warehouse and transport operations due to outsourcing. The union said the announcement came as a shock to workers and since then SIPTU has had a number of meetings with them.
Union representatives have also held discussions with management at the company and attended an initial LRC meeting last Friday.
Speaking ahead of this morning’s meeting, SIPTU organiser Karan O’Loughlin said the purpose of the meeting will be to maximise jobs retention through staff redeployment within the company and where possible employment by DHL, the company to which the work is being outsourced.

DHL can do the job better/cheaper/more efficiently, but the unions are still going to block it on self-serving grounds.
Unions by their very nature are self serving. They represent their members. If they weren’t self serving then there’d be something very off.
DHL wont be doing it either as they have their contractors to out source to & I pity those lads because by the time it gets down to them there wont be much to be made out of it.
