No change in Ireland as HMV stores in UK to start accepting vouchers

A spokesperson from Deloitte has confirmed that there are currently no plans to do similar in Ireland.

HMV SHOPS IN the UK are set to start accepting vouchers from tomorrow, Sky News is reporting.

The 16 HMV stores in the republic will remain closed, however.

The troubled retailer had been criticised for selling gift cards right up until they entered administration and then failing to accept them.

David Carson, a partner in Deloitte Ireland, was named as the receiver to the HMV Ireland company last Wednesday, 16 January.

In the days that followed there were a number of sit-ins in Irish stores as some of the 300 employees throughout the 16 stores protested at not being paid for time already worked.

Now that these sit-ins have ended, all 16 stores in Ireland remain closed.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, a spokesperson from Deloitte confirmed that the stores in Ireland would “remain closed when he [Carson] carries out his assessment,” essentially preventing vouchers from being honoured in Ireland.

The lads in UK want to avoid court action for reckless trading and will honour gift vouchers because company law is much tougher in UK.
They know the companies office here are a useless bunch and will not back action against directors of companies that are trading recklessly – just look at the directors of Anglo, nobody is responsible, nobody pays for white collar crime, Irish companies law is a joke.

That’s stating reason. How can a shut store honour a voucher? As soon as they re-open, then the same should apply here as across the Irish Sea.

If they were informed by accountants that the business was not viable and continued to sell gift vouchers up till Christmas (and after?) then the directors can be sued.
All it takes is for one gift voucher holder to sue the directors and action will be taken, if lots of gift voucher holders get together then directors can go to jail for reckless trading.

Unscrupulous trading from another big British multi-national. They treat their Irish customers like fools, with rip-off prices and poor customer service. To continue to sell vouchers when they were expecting to close is sneaky, and probably criminal.

    Hi Kevin,

It is, of course, the Republic of Ireland. I thought the headline and the rest of the article would have made that clear.

I have already deleted some of your comments on this piece where you personally insulted other people who commented.

Unless you want to be banned from commenting, I would suggest that you treat them with a bit more respect.

    Kind Regards,

Double check that info , the HIV vouchers are card swipes , places like game to my knowledge won’t be able to swipe and see the actual value , there were some places oing promotions like free pizza to ” honour” the HIV vouchers , good publicity etc , but just check before getting too excited , I kinda doubt another business like game will just let you essentially get their stock for free ,I did hear they may try buy some stores in UK from HMV but never heard about them accepting vouchers here.

If purchased with credit card you are entitled to chargeback from credit card company, make sure to register complaint with credit card co within 60 days of purchase date.
Try to find the agent in Ireland or UK, they will have to repair or replace if shop is no longer in business once you have proof of date of purchase.
