The Submarine Bar in Crumlin Google Street View

The Submarine Bar in Crumlin closed as receivers appointed

The well-known pub in south Dublin had receivers appointed to it yesterday.

THE SUBMARINE BAR in Crumlin has gone into receivership, TheJournal.ie has learned.

The well-known bar in the south Dublin suburb went into receivership yesterday with the premises and its adjoining pub, Rory O’Connor’s, and off licence also shuttered.

It is understood around 45 jobs will be lost as a result of the closure which was confirmed when the receivers, understood to be Grant Thornton, moved in yesterday.

Grant Thornton would not comment on the matter when contacted this afternoon. The Submarine Bar’s phone appeared to be disconnected.

Local councillor Michael O'Sullivan said that the pub had "been in difficulty for some time". But staff who worked at the pub, one of whom worked there for around 30 years, had no prior knowledge of the impending closure.

"It was built for World Cup audiences and we don't have that any more. It depended on having big crowds," O'Sullivan, a Labour councillor, told TheJournal.ie.

Another local councillor, Henry Upton, said the pub had been closed during the days and only opened at night and on the weekend in recent months.

The Ashleaf Shopping Centre, where the pub is located, continues to trade as normal.

I live nearby and I can’t say I’m surprised , or upset about it. They killed it when they redeveloped it, and it was primarily a hangout for skangers who wouldn’t be admitted anywhere else.

Couldn’t agree more. It was a great pub years ago but after it was redeveloped it lost all its character. It’s still a bit sad though.

I dont want to sound bad as I know people are loosing jobs but I honestly will never care when a pub goes down the crapper

This is because of the silly price of pints and spirits..

5 Euro for a longneck bottle – 1 euro in Dunnes

Bacardi and coke 10 euro – Bottle of Bacardi is 20 Euro in Dunnes

They’ve had it too good for too long-

This is the problem, for one night in the pub, you can have 5 at home. The biggest scam of all time is when someone is driving and you meet up to watch some sport, and you pay €4.80 for a pint of Guinness and the poor unfortunate with the car is paying €6 for a pint of coke or fanta (most of which is ice).

In Australia nearly all bars have hoses that can can be set to spray out different minerals and they also keep a variety of juice mixers in large cartons. This is the way to reduce the price of basic cocktails that bars wont adopt in dublin, even in the city center.

That’s because those post mixes are poor quality and Irish people wouldn’t have them.
They were tried in the 80′s and did not take off.
Even so they would be no cheaper than bottled drinks.

Price of a drink is 1/3 tax, 1/3 overheads and 1/3 profit. €1.50 isn’t that much for a publican to ask is it?

I dont’t get the small minded ignorant commentary on this report. If it is in receivership it means its not making money. Therefore how can they be ripping people off? I pity anyone who has put their heart and soul into trying to make a business work in this country and has had to watch it go into receivership. I’d imagine the rate charges for this premises was around €50k a year and that’s before they ever pulled a pint. Add all the rest of the expenses on top and its hard to imagine how publican can stay in business these days. The only people ripping people off these days is our government because anyone who is running a business knows damn well they are lucky if they break even. You people make me sick!

If you continue trying to recoup your overheads from a shrinking customer base, you’ll end up charging over the odds for your product. You’re in a viscous circle very quickly, you charge more, you lose customers, you change more….

From your side of the counter that might look justified, with your costs climbing you need to get in as much as you can from wherever you can. But customers, of any business, are not all that concerned about your cost of doing business, they just want the best deal for themselves. So, from their side of the counter, it looks like a rip-off.

The first bar I ever bought a pint in over the age of 18 .From tramps disco bar to euro 88 and italia 90 and USA 94 and all the rest . From dropping in for a quick pint after work that meant you stayed there all night in your overalls and drinking 7 nights a week and still being able to get up for work in the morning.amazing memories of ” THE SUB”
