Cardinal Brady notes 'significant' date of Pope's retirement news

February 11 is the World Day of the Sick, Brady notes, asking for prayers for those responsible for choosing his successor.

THE ONLY IRISHMAN with a vote in choosing the next Pope has asked Catholics to pray for those responsible for picking the Catholic Church’s next supreme pontiff.

Cardinal Seán Brady, the Archbishop of Armagh, is one of two Irish cardinals – but the other, former Archbishop of Dublin Desmond Connell, is discounted from casting a vote in the elections to choose the next pope on the grounds of his age.

Brady said this evening that while news of Pope Benedict XVI’s retirement was “a shock”, he was certain that the outgoing pontiff had deliberately chosen February 11 – the World Day of the Sick, and the feast of Our Lady of Loures – as the date on which he announced his retirement.

“Our Lady always points us to her Son,” Brady said. “In his statement today Pope Benedict pointed us to Christ as the Supreme Pastor of the Church”.

“His announcement today echoes his words on the day he was elected Pope. Then he described himself as a humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord. With typical humility, courage and love for the Church he has clearly come to the view that the Lord now wants him to use his remaining physical and spiritual energies by serving the Church in prayer,” Brady said.

I think this is a profound act of humility, a conscientious and responsible decision to hand over the ministry of the successor of Saint Peter in a time of great challenge for the Church and for faith in the modern world.

Brady sought prayers for both the retiring pontiff, thanking him for his “generous service of the Universal Church”, and asked Catholics to pray “for those who will have responsibility for electing his successor.”

World day of the sick is appropriate. There are few things as wholeheartedly sick as the Rrrroman Catholic Church.

So sorry to see him go. Organized religion is a cancer in our society and this man helped precipitate the mass desertion from the Catholic Church which is underway. If he’d at least stay another few years we could close them down and be rid of their evil ways forever.

They don’t have to have a family member raped by a priest to be repulsed by that abomination of an organisation. All they need is sympathy and empathy for its countless victims , the victims that the RCC has trampled on . Many of my country men and women bare the pain and scars of child abuse Inflicted by the hand of the RCC and the Irish state. Scars they will never heal from. They will never see justice served .Remember they are the underdogs not the almighty powerful church .

My dear James, how do you know otherwise? The pope and his minions only had to make a heartfelt apology, but they didn’t have the humility to rake that small step. Isn’t that what Jesus’ work on earth was all about? Love and humility. I’m sorry, but I really don’t see anywhere that his representative on earth followed his example. I’m neither hateful or angry James, just saddened at the desperation of people to hold on to a system that failed mist of them miserably.

Celia, he did say in his letter to Irish Catholics: “You have suffered grievously and I am truly sorry,” he wrote. “Your trust has been betrayed and your dignity has been violated… I openly express the shame and remorse that we all feel.”
He also said: “How much filth there is in the Church, and even among those… in the priesthood.”

But you’re right and you’re not hateful.

They only apologised because they were forced too. If they were left to their own devices they would have been happy to sit on their hands continue with the cover up and say nothing. The church didn’t expose themselves their victims did! The damage the RCC did cannot be undone . Their words are and always have been meaningless and empty.

Think general views expressed here and in general Irish society might not square with your RC ethos James. However opinion is increasingly one that the church needs to change…as with the Pope….to recognise when it is unable to fulfill what it was originally intended and make way for one that can. That time is now. Time for another reformation.

He is as guilty as any rapist. Never mind his Christianity where was his humanity. Still he got a silly red had in return for it so the rape victims presumably feel much better now.
