Irish Presidency secures EU agreement on domestic violence protection order

The agreement will ensure that a civil protection order, such as a barring order for domestic violence, can still be enforced if the victim travels or moves country.

THE IRISH PRESIDENCY has secured an agreement with the European Parliament on behalf of EU member states, on improving protection for victims of domestic violence.

Final discussions were held between the parliament and the Council of Ministers in Brussels yesterday to reach an agreement on regulation for the European Protection Order. This regulation will ensure that a civil protection order, such as a barring order for domestic violence, can still be enforced if the victim travels, or moves, from one member state to another.

Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence Alan Shatter said the agreement will enable victims to have continuity of protection under the law which will make travel or relocation a reality for many of them for the first time.

The proposed agreement will now be presented to member state ambassadors for their approval and to the Justice and Home Affairs Council, chaired by Shatter, which will take place in Brussels early next month.

Great idea and about time. The more protection there is for men and women affected by domestic violence the better.

Here are a couple of articles we’ve featured specifically around male victims of domestic abuse:

@michelle I am not talking about articles specifically focused on male victims of domestic abuse, obviously they will have images of males. I am talking about generic domestic abuse articles such as this one which makes no mention of male or female victims.

Your second link referring to a billion women marching for vag day does not mention male victims at all @michelle in fact it’s quite the opposite and assumes there are only female victims. Fighting violence against both sexes together makes more sense to me.

That’s great to hear but we still need to reform our own laws in relation to partner abuse, currently you can only get a safety order if you have been living with the person for 6 months out of the last 12.

Not strictly true. If you are married or in a civil partnership you can get an order against your other half no matter how long you have lived together, even if they own the house. You can also get a safety order against the father/mother of your child even if you are not living with or have never lived with them. The six out of nine months’ applies to barring orders for people who are not in a marriage or civil partnership but who are living together, and those six months don’t have to be consecutive.
