Portugal police 'seize world's largest haul of counterfeit euros'

Police confiscated a total of €380,200 in fake 200-euro notes.

PORTUGESE POLICE TODAY said they had confiscated a total of €380,200 in fake 200-euro notes, calling it “the world’s largest seizure of counterfeit euros”.

The 1,901 fake banknotes were discovered in a police operation in the northern city of Porto on Tuesday, during which a 46-year-old man was also arrested, the judicial police said in a statement.

The counterfeit bills were “of exceptional quality”, they said, adding that the counterfeiting operation had been active since 2002 in numerous countries, including Spain, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and Portugal.

Why print fake €200 notes? No one really accepts them. Better off with €50 notes?

Exactly all it takes is to go into a shop and ask for change or buy something small with the 50 note and then ya get real money for change :)

So a counterfeit euro is worthless? In that case they should cone to Ireland where we have billions of near-worthless euros!

As opposed to the official fiat currency, printed on paper, given a value and lent at interest, backed by neither Gold nor Silver.

Something fishy going on here. Portuguese police find “world’s largest haul of counterfeit euro notes” and the total is a paltry €380,000 ? I call shennigans on this – it is extraordinarily difficult to counterfeit notes and the investment in the necessary equipment alone would cost more than €380k. It would be more believable if it was €38m worth they found but €380k is suss.
