Horsemeat scandal: Frozen burger sales down 42 per cent

Data from Kantar Worldpanel Ireland has shown the impact of the horsemeat scandal on sales of frozen burgers.

FROZEN BURGER SALES have fallen by 42 per cent in the wake of the horsemeat scandal, according to figures published today.

Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland has published consumer data for the 12 weeks to the 17 February finding that in the four weeks to the same date, sales of frozen burgers in Irish supermarkets fell by 42 per cent.

Kantar, which monitors the grocery purchasing habits of 3,000 demographically representative households in Ireland, says that so far the impact of the horsemeat scandal on supermarkets has only been in consumers changing their habits rather than where they do their shopping.

For individual supermarkets Aldi has enjoyed sales growth of 29 per cent, increasing its overall market share in Ireland from 4.6 per cent last year to 5.9 per cent so far this year.

(Click here to see a larger version of this image)

“What is notable from Aldi’s performance is that it has grown sales of fruit and vegetables – the most valuable grocery category – by 39 per cent this year,” David Berry, Kantar Worldpanel’s commercial director, said.

Among the three biggest supermarkets – Tesco, Dunnes and SuperValu – only Dunnes increased its market share noticeably with 4.1 per cent sales growth.

The growth in the market of just under one per cent is the highest level since December 2011 with Kantar saying this is attributable to the increase in grocery prices.

Grocery inflation is at 5.8 per cent for the three month period ending 17 February, which is the highest level since September 2008 when grocery inflation was recorded at 6.2 per cent.

Fair comment. I can see Donoghue’s point. But it will be too late by then. If he wants the voters to use the ballot box then there has to be an election now so that they can use it. I can’t imagine any voters who would disagree with or object to this?

Sergeant – the thing about Sinn Fein is not the leadership or its idolising of its leader or indeed the stupidity of not allowing its members to vote on matters of conscience – which makes them as bad as any of the others – The thing about Sinn Fein is that among its supporters are very very serious southern republicans – people who believe in Ireland – so if the leadership of Sinn Fein do get into power then they will have to toe the republican line or they will be taken out of office !

What about people that definitely don’t want the water meters and they go and talk to in workers what if they start saying things we are here to put meters in and that’s it then it call on the do called garda of this country to protect them even if nothing is happening the people that have already been hurt for just standing around protesting and the garda won’t say if they were the ones that started the problem in the first place. NO MATTER WHAT THE GOVERNMENT THROUGH AT US WE WILL STILL PROTEST TO GET THE WATERS CHARGES ABOLISHED.

    David
You should avoid intimidation by not making such comments. The real issue is the extent to which this site has been undermined by a very nasty element who cannot deal with any challenge to their position without lashing out in a very antisocial and threatening way.
Democracy isn’t about shouting the loudest or being the most aggressive as they believe.
It was appalling to see Sinn Fein elements quite comfortably in the company of Dissident IRA elements in both Santry and Coolock as if they were joined at the hip. When the abuse being hurled at the Gardai is listened to we should all be very afraid.
It appears that funding for opposition voices isn’t about raffles and dinners and members donations anymore but rather the illegal activities of criminals who provide security and protection services and the profits from smuggled cigarettes and laundered diesel
When someone raises these subjects the standard Company Policy Statement is …..” if any citizen has evidence of criminal activity they should take it to the police” !
When will we grow up as an electorate.

@ David you obviously believe the media in this country portraying people as sinister or republican dissidents who have hijacked the IW protests, this is a scare tactic to undermine the protest. I was present at Coolock station and previously at Clarehall when scuffles broke out and on both occasions thuggish behaviour was evident from both sides ( Garda & Protesters) but I challenge any man to stand on the sideline while your mother, sister, daughter or neighbour is physically removed or verbally abused for peacefully protesting in an area they have lived all there lives. It is much harder to restrain yourself in these situations but it is telling that not one arrest has been made for assault against a Gardai . Bad language and pushing are not life threatining and as for dissident republicans hijacking the protest it’s so funny it’s laughable. People film these situations as a form of protection and also to spread the message on social media. Join the fight back. Coolock Says No

@ Hugh what’s appalling is your lack of knowledge in regard to dissident republicans and the Coolock area as the locals well know the dissidents became involved in a feud with a powerful local drug gang some three years ago and the dissidents lost. This feuding was well reported within the media with the subsequent death of the dissident leader and his two lieutenants (within 18months ) so for main stream media and people like you who portray Coolock as a hive of dissident activity it shows how gullible and out of touch with common sentiments you really are.

Never a better sign that the government has lost the fight about water charges. Throw enough mud around and some will stick. A poor , poor attempt to disrupt the increasing level of resistance to a tax to pay back bondholders, NOT a water conservation exercise. Scrap water tax now or go down in history as the most punitive government in Irish history.

My reading of the story states quite clearly that Revenue examined the complaint as did the Gardai through the Fraud Squad and a file was sent to the DPP who decided there were no grounds for a prosecution.
Now we have the PAC Squad wanting to have their piece of the action and all on the basis of what sounds like an old gossip monger from the Public Service!
I wouldn’t say any of that if the DPP hadn’t been involved as we have learned of the absolute independence of that role over many many years!

@Hugh or Richie or whatever your name is this week….what a crock of sheet you…the DPP assess a case based on the file sent to them by the Gardai. Since the claimant has no authority to view the file sent to the DPP by the Gardai, the claimant has no way of knowing whether the Gardai acted corruptly by omitting vital pieces of evidence. The whole system is smoke and mirrors and hence why there is one law for the elites and one for the rest of us plebs. I am talking from experience here as I have witnessed at first hand how the DPPs office works. The whole system is rotten to the core. We bring our own water to drink Niamh.
Our deck fillers can allow contamination due to the nature of filling.
Also out water tanks are over 10 years old so we drop a few milton tabs to keep it safe.
It’s grand for tea, brushing teeth, washing etc and to answer yoir next question we do pay for it in our marina fees.
It clearly states that waste disposal,toilets/showers, water & parking is included.

Shame on the government and the controlled meda in Ireland trying to make something huge out of what is essentially a tiny minority of people protesting. The tens of thousands of people all over this country protested and you tried to ignore it, there was very little coverage and played down numbers , now that it suits you, it warrants headlines and massive coverage. You are the ones that are responsible for putting the workers and Garda in this position by forcing this disgusting, corrupt, immoral quango on to the people who pay you to represent them. If people are angry it is because you are selling us up the Swanee for your thirty pieces of silver. What reeally rankles with you is the fact that the people are waking up and it is coming as a surprise to you. We are angry and we are not taking anymore !! Abolish his quango now and have a referendum while your at it. Then there will be no need for us to take to the streets. C’mon Enda what are you afraid of ? Referendum now ! !

Let’s conserve water by digging up roads and installing meters while a large proportion of clean treated water is lost.
    Doesn’t make sense to me.
And did they not say that if to much water is conserved that the price of water will go up.
Irish water is one of the biggest cons a government has pulled off on there own people.

Do you know why we needed the bailout? Because we were forced by our government to pay the gambling debts of our banks. If they had been allowed to fail, as they should have been, the notion of not paying back bondholders wouldn’t be on the table. The debt isn’t our debt and we should not be asked to pay it.

It depends how you look at it. We tend as individuals to try to paint ourselves in the best possible light, another why to look at it would be that we are not courteous but repressed from years of Catholic teaching telling us how sinful it is to express yourself. And these howiwas are people in fact freely expressing their views. I always thought I was easy going and liberated etc till I spent a few years travelling the world then I realized how repressed an individual I was due to an Irish upbringing.I don’t need a politician to tell me how to think and act. We’ve replaced the church with another set of mind police.

Paddy Power has FF/FG or FF/FG plus independents as favourites for the next election. The current government if third favourite. FF/SF is next at 9/2. A majority led SF coalition is 50/1 and that would be with Labour and the Greens. No way SF are in government after the next election. Unless FF sell us all out, which is not beyond the bounds of possibility. But I don’t believe that FF could stomach being the less republican party in any Irish government.

The next government will almost certainly be one of the first three favourites listed by Mr. Power. Opposing water charges is one thing. Voting for economic meltdown is quite something else.

When mine was being installed a few months ago I was chatting to the lads who had been out of work before this contract and delighted for the wage. I think it shocking and disgusting how people are treating these workers.
My anger is at the ministers who have approved IW and hired “their own” in management to get hefty bonuses if they do their job. The protestors should aim their angry at them!!!

    http://collectivelyconscious.net/articles/why-iceland-should-be-in-the-news-but-is-not/
Ireland versus Iceland. Read this fascinating story.

During a similar debacle to that which occurred in Ireland,The Head of State, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, refused to ratify the law that would have made Iceland’s citizens responsible for its bankers’ debts, and accepted calls for a referendum.
(in Ireland we have been refused a referendum on water taxes-and no question whatsoever of having one on bankers debts!)

Of course the international community only increased the pressure on Iceland. Great Britain and Holland threatened dire reprisals that would isolate the country. As Icelanders went to vote, foreign bankers threatened to block any aid from the IMF. The British government threatened to freeze Icelander savings and checking accounts. As Grimsson said: “We were told that if we refused the international community’s conditions, we would become the Cuba of the North. But if we had accepted, we would have become the Haiti of the North.” (How many times have I written that when Cubans see the dire state of their neighbor, Haiti, they count themselves lucky.)

In the March 2010 referendum, 93% voted against repayment of the debt. The IMF immediately froze its loan. But the revolution (though not televised in the United States), would not be intimidated. With the support of a furious citizenry, the government launched civil and penal investigations into those responsible for the financial crisis. Interpol put out an international arrest warrant for the ex-president of Kaupthing, Sigurdur Einarsson, as the other bankers implicated in the crash fled the country.

But Icelanders didn’t stop there: they decided to draft a new constitution that would free the country from the exaggerated power of international finance and virtual money. (The one in use had been written when Iceland gained its independence from Denmark, in 1918, the only difference with the Danish constitution being that the word ‘president’ replaced the word ‘king’.)

To write the new constitution, the people of Iceland elected twenty-five citizens from among 522 adults not belonging to any political party but recommended by at least thirty citizens. This document was not the work of a handful of politicians, but was written on the internet. The constituent’s meetings are streamed on-line, and citizens can send their comments and suggestions, witnessing the document as it takes shape. The constitution that eventually emerges from this participatory democratic process will be submitted to parliament for approval after the next elections.
We want you gone Donohue, gone gone gone-and your meters with you.!

More importantly, who asked him to and as Transport Minister what does he have to do with any of this? But how disingenuously noble of him to offer to sacrifice himself for the poor auld Irish Water workers who he claims are being abused daily. Now and me this what would have happened if the men and women of Ireland left it to the Ballot Box in 1916? It was ok for them to be angry then and do something about it by whatever means possible but not for Irish people now. How dare Paschal Donohue and his colleagues treat the all ready hard pressed Irish people with such lack of respect. Enough is enough
