The 5 at 5 5 stories, 5 minutes, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five things you need to know as you head out the door…

1. #JOBSWATCH: A pharmaceuticals company in Co Wicklow is to close with the loss of 280 jobs. MSD’s manufacturing plant in Rathdrum will wind down by the end of 2014. The company employs 2,000 people in Ireland.

2. #BUSINESS POST: The High Court has approved the appointment of an interim examiner to the company behind the Sunday Business Post. The court was told that Post Publications Ltd’s annual revenue has fallen by 52 per cent, and its circulation revenue by 26 per cent, in the last five years – while it is also trying to lower the annual rent of €400,000 it pays for its Dublin offices.

3. #SOCIAL MEDIA: Twitter’s director of public policy has told an Oireachtas committee that the privacy of its users is important and that there is “a fundamental value in anonymity”. The comments came as the Oireachtas’s Communications committee continued its discussion on the impact of social media misuse.

4. #TOP 20: Ireland has returned to the top 20 most competitive places to visit, according to the World Tourism and Travel Competitiveness Index. However, the index -which aims to measure the cost of visiting various countries around the world – said fuel was still too expensive here.

5. #RATS ON A PLANE: Departures and arrivals from Dublin Airport were disrupted for a short period earlier today when a cargo plane’s nosewheel collapsed onto the runway as it landed. The plane’s two crew members were unhurt. It’s emerged that the plane was carrying a cargo of live rates and mice, which are intended for sale in pet shops around the country. A source said the cargo was a regular arrival at Dublin Airport every Thursday.

Re 1. If someone with access to all the details, (not looking at you Gavan) could count up all the job losses since the gov. took office and then add up all the wonderful New jobs which have come on stream, which number would be higher? I wonder.

    No contest on that.

Most of these job announcements are pure bull.

Someone says: We gonna hire 120 more, or 500 more.

OK. Result: headlines, maybe a minister bla bla. PUBLICITY!

Cut to one year later. Someone has hired — 10, if they are lucky.

Nobody can say I’m wrong on this. Why? Because not one solitary journalist, not one publication, has followed up these bullshit announcements to see how they pan out in practice.
