People attend the Patrick's Day parade in Dublin last year Laura Hutton/Photocall Ireland

Poll: Do St Patrick's Day celebrations portray Ireland in a positive way?

As thousands of people celebrate our national holiday, we’re asking if it’s good for Ireland’s image.

CELEBRATIONS ARE KICKING off for St Patrick’s Day with hundreds of thousands of people expected to take part in parades and events around the country.

However away from the organised events of the morning and afternoon, there will also be the usual concerns about the influence of alcohol which has become intrinsically linked with Ireland’s national holiday.

So we’re asking: Do St Patrick’s Day celebrations portray Ireland in a positive way?

Poll Results:

No, it has been overshadowed by alcohol (1099)
It makes Ireland look both good and bad (1048)
Yes, it highlights some of the best things about Ireland (371)

It brings tourists, which is beneficial to the economy… But I’m tired with the drunk stereotype of Ireland. Unfortunately, far too many Irish people are only happy to live up to it.

    I’ll be having a sober Paddy’s day.

Does that make it more like a fact then than a stereotype?

Plenty of tourists seem to be here to live up to it – take the visiting drunks out and most of the Patrick’s Day problem would be gone

Used to work in a job which required me to work most bank holidays so every year on Paddy’s day after getting off the bus id be walking home passed all the puke on the footpaths, kids running around outside pubs, smashed glass, people hammered outside chippers and it would be still bright out! I did that for about 10 years, havent spent a single Paddys day in a pub since 1997 and i never will again, its a great show for tourists and kids but what some people turn it into it is just a disgusting display of a nation’s character.

The US office of the American company I worked for celebrate Saint Patrick’s day by all wearing leprechaun costumes and drinking beer – in the office.

Any reference to poor stereotypes was met with the expected “It’s really not meant like that. It’s only fun.”

Perhaps we should celebrate the 4th of July by all wearing fat-suits and burning copies of “The Origin of Species”.

That’s odd, in my city in the USA, our St. Patrick’s Day parade and festival was a great celebration of bagpipe music and our Irish heritage. Of course the Irish themed pubs in town were filled with people drinking, but everywhere else the atmosphere of the festival was very family oriented, and a nice tribute the the great Irish people. It’s too bad that some on this page have a negative view of your cousins across the pond because here on USA’s east coast, we love our brethren on the Emerald Isle.

One thing i cant understand is why the gardai allow so many junkies congregate on O’Connell Street at night when so many tourists are over.

Last night the wife and i walked into town about 9pm , O’Connell street was like a scene from a ‘living dead’ movie, junk bags everywhere. Overheard American tourists commenting on it….

All i know is that every little gypsy shit will be out dipping pockets today so be careful !!

Agreed. All the Americans were hammered at 9.30am before the parade even started, worse than any of the irish, they totally use our day as an excuse to get drunk. I was almost drunk myself from the smell of it haha. I was frightened of my life in between them, a girl in a shop asked was I really irish because she said everybody just goes around pretending their irish.

I don’t think it’s not necessarily they actually “want to be Irish” but Niall hit the nail on the head when he said they see this day and what THEY define as ‘Irishness’ as “celebrating our culture, music and history” – SO WHAT if they have a very romantic vision of what it means to be Irish, for me that’s grand because generally their vision is of a happy, fun-loving, friendly bunch of Messers that know how to have a good time.

The Irish Bar phenomena is another perfect example – I travel quite a lot with my job and have come across ‘Irish’ bars in the most unbelievable towns and cities like Guangzhou, China or Ho Chi Minh city and Delhi, and they’re very popular places for locals, most have regular music, big crowds, Guinness all over the shop – and folks who go to those bars feel that they get a bit of the Spirit of (what they believe … and honestly for the most part is true) what it means to be Irish – a happy, fun-loving, friendly bunch of Messers that know how to have a good time.

And when I travel and meet new folks, say I’m Irish, in my own personal experience introducing myself as an Irishman has mostly had a positive, more inquisitive reaction … I hope it’s been the same for you?

Vanessa, I’d guess that comment came from a person who already has a pretty twisted and very petty attitude to most foreigners – in my experience being identified as an Irishman abroad has mostly had a positive reaction and engagement.

I know from experience the same can be said for some Americans or English or even French abroad – some of them even say their from other countries (Canada, Wales for example) because of the negative reaction they sometimes get in certain countries.

I completely understand why other countries are represented but is it necessary to have multiple high school marching bands? Is there not enough about this country to be represented on this day. Point is, there are plenty of talented people and organisations that would love a bit of exposure in this country. We are a small country, don’t need to have the longest and biggest parade but a more meaningful would be much much more interesting!

You can have this view or can have the other man. This morning in Collins Park in Clongriffin when walking dog, large group of underage, covered in Irish flags, smashing bottles in children playground, shouting abuse, dumping litter into the ponds, throwing stuff at poor swans.. Underage girls dressed bit like from red light district if you know what i mean..Garda chasing them forth and back bit helpless… Yeah loads to be proud of. Essence if sc€&mbaggery if you ask me.

Omg for one day in the year, our national day, can the Irish people stop moaning & bringing the country & it’s people down. I celebrating Paddies Day sober & I know a lot of other people who are too. @ de same time I have no problem if people have a few drinks.

New poll idea: how many Irish people hate themselves because they are Irish?

Some huge amount of Navel-gazing we do as a Nation this time of year … every year … same polls, same Oirish Daily Mail shock-stories that the “Irish do a lot of drinking”, same “I’m ashamed to be Irish” topics on Joe Duffy.

Don’t like being Irish – take up citizenship of Belgium (but in fairness their beers and chips are brilliant!).

I never realised sterotype was so bad until I moved to the US. However, on balance it raises our profile and it is up to our new emigrants to present the face of a modern Irish nation.

Was nearly sat on and puked on by a drunken man with his child on the dart, then had a group of kids ask me to buy some beer for them and saw numerous people being put into garda vans outside central bank. This was 4-5pm and i was with my little one.
Had a nice afternoon in bray though.

Who is the genius that chose this time of year, perennially stacking the weather against it all? A cynical pub owner? Lets do it right on May on June 17th, for the love and honour of Pat!

Despite the positives, we are, collectively, a bit uncouth, a bit unsophisticated, a bit drunken, a bit inarticulate and so on in comparison to other Western nationalities. And we know it. Like it or not. This is a source of embarrassment for a lot of us. I think we’ve all had a moment when we’ve been embarrassed by a fellow Irishman/woman’s behaviour. But this is us. And this is where our self-loathing, love/hate complex stems from I think. Other nationalities can come here and act up for the day or two that’s in it and then go home; basically using us a safe haven to run wild, a ”who cares, they’re only Irish, when in Rome” attitude. But we are like this permanently.
