The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you should know before you head out the door.

1. #NICOLA FURLONG A Japanese court has found American teen Richard Hinds (19) guilty of murdering Wexford woman Nicola Furlong on 24 May last year, sentencing him to up to 10 years’ detention with labour in prison. Furlong’s family said that Nicola’s life “was worth more than that” and they were “not really” satisfied with the verdict.

2. #SAME-SEX MARRIAGE Labour has published a draft law to allow same-sex civil marriage. The legislation – launched by Labour’s Seanad leader Ivana Bacik and Eoin Holmes, who is running in next week’s by-election in Meath East – proposes to change the existing law surrounding civil marriages, removing a clause which forbids same-sex couples from availing of a full civil marriage.

3. #KILKENNY A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a man in Kilkenny on 7 March this year. Anthony Barrett (43) was found dead at a house in the city’s Fatima Place.

4. #EUROPE Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the EU has reached a provisional deal with the European Parliament on setting up a new banking supervisor to work across the Eurozone. This is considered a major factor in the EU’s plan to overcome the financial crisis.

5. #INDIA A British woman in her early-30s was treated today for injuries sustained after jumping from a hotel balcony in Agra, India. Reports say she was trying to escape a man she believed was going to sexually assault her. She had asked for a 4am wake-up call but when the man called to the door he offered her a massage and reportedly refused to leave.
