SIPTU members to protest against EU water privatisation

The members, which include local authority workers, are to protest outside the Dáil today.

A RALLY WILL take place outside the Dáil today by SIPTU members opposed to the privatisation of water resources in Europe.

SIPTU members said that they will rally outside the Dáil at 10.30am to protest against EU policies which promote the privatisation of water resources.

Campaign

The rally is part of an EU-wide campaign by the European Federation of Public Service Unions. SIPTU says this campaign is “focused on highlighting its concern at the liberalisation of EU laws governing the ownership of water resources”.

SIPTU Local Authority Chairperson, Matt Henry, said they are concerned due to the decision of the Irish Government to establish Irish Water “and transfer water assets out of local democratic ownership”.

The concern in relation to who owns and controls water is the same across Europe and internationally.

The SIPTU National Water Services Committee, which is organising the rally, represents over 3000 workers in Local Authorities employed in water services. Following the rally, SIPTU members will meet with political parties and groups to outline their concerns.

SIPTU is also supporting a campaign to raise one million signatures as part of a European citizens initiative to bring pressure on the EU Commission to reverse its intention to conclude a concessions directive which it says “would have the effect of promoting the privatisation of water services across Europe”.

Check out the Constitution all natural resourses belong to the state including the air. So the question is do we need a referendum to allow a private or semi-state company own the natural resourses?

Article 10.1: “All natural resources … belong to the State *subject to all estates and interests therein for the time being lawfully vested in any person or body*”

Article 10.3: “Provision may be made by law for the management of the property which belongs to the State by virtue of this Article and for the control of the alienation, whether temporary or permanent, of that property”

    So, no.

Yes. Correct the Constitution allows the state to do what it wants with the natural resourses of the country even where this is against the wishes of the Citizens form which the Government gets its powers.

I hope people remember this at the next election. This Government has introduced laws against the wishes of the people. But we wont. We will continue to vote for the ones who tells us they fix the potholes bit dont tell us they will charge us for doing it.

The water will remain the property of the state. It is the management and supply assets and responsibility for safe supply that will be privatised.

The problem over here is we over treat the water, we shouldn’t have to ensure that every drop of water is fit for human consumption, if we didn’t do this it would cost significantly less to produce water and maybe meters or privatization wouldn’t be needed.

But what other option is there paddy? two water feeds, one with treated and the other not? Or would you have people treating water at their end? Having to boil water before you use it.

Imagine the comments on here if there was an article on water treatment being stopped to cut costs!

I think what Paddy means is that water used in toilets, outside hoses is also treated the same as water out of taps, even though they don’t need the same treatment as drinking water, except the odd house dog which prefers toilet water

Even if it is just for toilets and showers, it still means you’d need 2 water distribution networks in parallel for the treated and untreated water (unless you have only one with untreated water and expect each building to have a water processing system, but that doesn’t sound like a way to save resources).

Fixing the multiple leaks in the existing network is probably a more efficient approach … It would most likely save at least as much clean water.

I agree that 2 pipes is too much work to fix it. The same problem applies to water sewerage. Rain water from the road drains is often mixed with sewerage from homes and all sent to the sewerage plants. This rain water should be separated and could be piped to the sea or rivers immediately

I totally agree we need to take responsibility. Those who wish to take our assets are capitalizing on societys laziness. Though the Bechtels are greedy power grabbing monsters they might do us a favor by waking us up to face the problems that are there. Privatization? No way. Fix the pipes and take responsibility? Absolutely.

Our taxes pay for treatment of our water, my water, well then I am going to stop paying my taxes and most certainly will not pay water charges because I can’t drink my water. Lime lime and more lime, washing machine breaking, kettles, showers getting destroyed. Oh and I presume this treatment of my water is the harmful fluoride they are putting into my water, fluoride has very bad effects on our health, I spoke with a TD recently who said that he has been onto the government about this we are nearly the only country still using fluoride in our water, I asked him how are the Irish government justifying continuing to put this on our water and he said ITS GOOD FOR OUR TEETH , my reply isn’t that what dentists are for. I suggest people who don’t know look up the result of consuming fluoride like this, NOT GOOD FOR US. I don’t drink my tap water and it ruins my appliances in my home and they want me to pay for it. Again the money collected will not be used to fund the water system it will be going into the black hole of debt. Don’t think otherwise.

We do it with our vote, I think SF will be getting my vote, if these water charges and property taxes and what ever other taxes they come up with in the future are brought in I will need someone to fight for my basic human right. What party leader put his life on the line to fight for people basic human right Gerry Adams, say what you like about what happened during that movement, all of which I cannot or never will agree with, he fought for people basic human rights through the only means possible at the time. Now he is on government I strongly believe he will do the same. We all know it is heading that way. I still have my reservations, maybe that’s from constant media propaganda, maybe it just my own feelings. I think the time will come when my basic human rights are gone, can’t afford property tax oil, will definitely have no access to water, who do I want representing me, parties that who only care about corruption banks eu and self interest or a party that fought for human rights with no benefit only loss to themselves.

When I went to get planning permission to build my house I was told that I had to take the local water scheme and I could not build a water tank! Apparently there was some E.U. directive that stated water could not be stored because of the risk of Leggionaires Disease . I subsequently discovered that legionnaires disease can occur/survive in water above 35 degrees celcius. The highest ever recorded temperature in ireland ever was 31.5 degrees !
Considering all the rain that falls in Ireland water charges are like charging the Arabs for sand! Mr. Washington has dealt with the fluoride issue above ! But apparently the republic of Ireland and a region in england are the only two places in the E.U. where fluoride is added to the water . Apparently the Nazis used it in concentration camps to keep the prisoners placid !
And one final point ; it was posted here some time ago that the water in Dail eireann is bottled water from Northern Ireland ; go figure !
