Flash floods and road warnings as heavy rain pours

Blackpool in Cork was submerged in four feet of water last night.

AS YOU CAN see from Met Éireann rainfall radar at 6.45am today, rain has not abated in most parts of the country and flooding has been reported in many areas.

Blackpool in Cork has been the worst hit and was submerged in four feet of water last night. The flash flood receded within hours and a clean-up operation is now underway. It is the second time in the past nine months that the town has been affected by flooding. Local businesspeople have told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that they received no warning, blaming authorities for inaction on an ineffective culvert (a pipe/drain that allows water to flow under the village).

Gardaí and AA Roadwatch have warned motorists to take care this morning as roads are “extremely wet”. Excess surface water and spot flooding are causing dangerous driving conditions.

  • The M11 Dublin to Wexford Road is closed both ways south of junction five Bray North due to flooding. Southbound traffic on the M50 is being diverted at J16 Cherrywood. Southbound traffic from the N11/Bray Rd is being diverted via Shankill and Bray. Northbound traffic on the M11 is being diverted at J6 Bray/Fassaroe and can rejoin the M11 at J5.
  • Drivers have also been asked to avoid the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap until conditions improve.
  • Particular care is needed on the Gorey to Wexford Road at Wells and Ballyedmond.
  • Fallen trees and cables have also been reported in Laois and Kildare.
  • Rain continues to fall heavily in Waterford City so spot flooding is likely.
  • Gardaí have asked for extra care in Killaloe because of road debris and fallen trees.

Met Éireann’s rain warning remains in place for Munster, Connacht and Leinster as widespread heavy rain continues. The meteorologists have said that eastern coastal areas are most at risk for flooding.

Meanwhile, a snow-ice warning is still in place for Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal. Gardaí have asked for extreme care on all routes around Letterkenny, Ballybofey and Glenties.

And in Northern Ireland, the electricity supplier has reported that 18,000 homes are without power due to the adverse weather, including storm force winds and heavy snow.

I totally agree. Met eireann issued heavy rainfall warnings 36 hours before it happened. When will people realise that to get accurate forecasts from trained and qualified meteorologists, you heed met eireann. Not the forecast in the Sun or some crappy iphone app.

Chris, isn’t sending out text messages for severe weather enough of a warning?

If i owned a business and got a message, the first thing i’d do is get prepared as much as possible.

And Tom, i’d still be prepared for the weather, regardless if it arrived or not. Better safe then sorry.

The text messages weren’t sent last night.

According to Cork City Council, Met Eireann never contacted them.

Either way there’s been a breakdown in communication somewhere.

Once again an area of Cork goes under water because of inept experts, as was the case in Douglas, engineers designed drainage systems which are wholly inadequate. Lucey, the city manager on the radio this morning describing the rainfall as unprecedented, what planet is this man living on, this is bloody Ireland, heavy, persistent rain is very much precedented. Once again, the engineers evade responsibility, the people pay.

This will continue to happen as long as Councillors allow developers build on land that floods. On the other side of the City Cork City Councillors voted to allow the GAA develop an All Weather Pitch on land that has been identified by the OPW as land that’s prone to flooding. Developing the all weather pitch will lead to even more displaced water. This can only impact further on the businesses already operating there.

Cork city council need to modernize its outdated drainage system” and they can’t cone up with some lame excuse about funding” this happened twice in less than a year and with our weather changing for the worse all the time’ they need to start it now’ otherwise local businesses and people living in Blackpool wont be able to get property insurance and that affects the employment of many people….. On the plus side’ up grading will generate a much needed job boost in the area…

Because that part of the earth is closer to the sun, hence the drought an heat. Also, the ocean currents are a lot cooler, and when you factor in the dry trade winds, no moisture is picked up, hence NO RAIN.
