Lorraine Higgins and John Lyons of Labour: poll-toppers, apparently.

Daily Fix: Monday

The latest highlights from the campaign trail – including: who’s the fairest of them all?

EVERY evening, TheJournal.ie brings your Daily Fix: our pick of the highlights (and some of the lows) of today’s campaign trail. Eleven days to go!

GOOD DAY FOR:

  • Tipperary North – A constituency already (relatively) awash with riches following Michael Lowry’s plundering in the last Dáil today had Labour hopeful Alan Kelly launch a €1m investment programme for high potential businesses in the area.
  • Labour – who topped both the male and female charts on Pigsback.com’s “fun election poll… who ticks your box on the election trail?” In the female poll, of ten options, Lorraine Higgins of Galway East was determined the best looking female candidate, while John Lyons in Dublin North West was the most handsome men. Worth noting, though, that (when we checked) 971 people had voted in the female poll, while just 580 had voted in the male one.
  • Mick Wallace – who got a public vote of approval from Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle.

BAD DAY FOR:

  • Micheál Martin: Ahead of the second leaders’ debate tonight, the Fianna Fáil leader channelled David Brent and found himself accused of racism after speaking in an Asian accent at an event this morning.
  • Fine Gael HQ: First they had hundreds of students show up at their door to protest about plans to drop Irish as a compulsory subject in the Leaving Cert. Tomorrow, Sinn Féin launches its own plans for an Gaeilge… on the doorstep of the same building.
  • Hashtag consistency: Discussion on tonight’s debate on Twitter will be populated by #ge11, #rtefl, #rtedeb and possibly #rteld. Using all four means users can only fit in messages of 112 characters or less.

‘ARE THESE ACTORS?’ MOMENT OF THE DAY:

The latest party political broadcast for Fine Gael, entitled ‘I have plans’, due to hit your screens in the coming days.

REJECTION OF THE DAY:

Public Speaking Ireland has said it’s refusing all work form politicians looking for speech coaching, saying politicians shouldn’t be allowed to work with speech coaches.

The road from Airlie Beach via Procerpine and most of the way to McKay is very close to the flood water table. In some places it feels like the floods onveither side of the road are actually higher than the road and it’s tidal. It’s a vast area about 100km’s long and not much can be done except taking precautions and avoidance in floods season. In another month they will be basking in sunshine again.

    Ooops.
Thats my cousin in Brisbane monitoring water levels outside his home. (once again).
It appears to be feast or famine in Australia these days.
    GLOBAL warming?
    Who knows.
Water always flows to the lowest point. (Down under).
    Excuse my sense of humour.

Happens same time every year and nothing done about it by the govt. One main highway from brisbane to cairns and floodwater halts all traffic-joke!
