Praveen Halappanavar - seen her after a preliminary inquest into his wife Savita's death - has continued his calls for a public inquiry into the events at UHG. Brian Farrell/Photocall Ireland

Praveen Halappanavar’s solicitor receives draft report on Savita death

Praveen Halappanavar will now be given the opportunity to offer feedback on the report before it is officially published.

Updated, 12:52

THE SOLICITOR representing the husband of the late Savita Halappanavar has received a copy of the HSE’s draft report into Savita’s death.

A seven-member team, chaired by London-based obstetrician Prof Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, has been working on the report for the last four months.

Praveen Halappanavar was not present when the report was delivered to the solicitor’s office, RTÉ reports, as he had decided not to participate in the investigation while seeking a full public inquiry into Savita’s death.

Halappanavar will be given an opportunity to offer feedback and propose changes given that he has not played a part in the investigation so far.

The report will not be formally published until next week at the earliest.

Halappanavar died at University Hospital Galway in October following a miscarriage, from suspected blood poisoning.

Around 30 people are named in the report – of which an early draft was leaked last month.

The early draft reportedly detailed a litany of medical failures in dealing with Halappanavar’s condition, and that a blood infection had gone undiagnosed for days.

She had been miscarrying for several days, and had requested an abortion, but had been told that a termination could not be carried out because a foetal heartbeat was still present.

Her death prompted major public outcry and sparked fresh calls for legislation to permit abortion in certain circumstances.

@Micky Kellegher. What a comment! Lucky to be in Ireland! Lucky his wife died too then! Were you lucky to have grown up in Clondalkin?? He has as much right to be in Ireland as you do/did in his India, attempting to make a living and provide for his family, as you no doubt feel an entitlement to in Bahrain or in India!! Visit many sweatshops while sourcing for Next Micheal?? Uneducated buffoon.

Every time I read anything in relation to this Savita case, I actually shudder, I’m near the same age as Savita and to think I would of been left to die like her, I’m atheist too so i don’t share catholic beliefs. Everyone deserves a choice in the year 2013! What a waste of a life to please the small minded of Ireland.

You can’t draw any conclusions until the report is made public. The termination issue may or may not be relevant. If it is, as the article suggests, involves other medical issues such as blood infections then it would appear that the Irish health system doesn’t care whether you are Catholic or not.

… I actually shudder reading your comment; you have no idea what happened there and have managed to paint it as mad catholic doctors going knocking off the opposition. Its a private thing now made public unfortuneately. Praveen seeing the report first is good but nothing in that report will make him happy.

And gerbeen, rightly so it should be made public, I’m assuming your not female so this incident will never affect you directly, as someone who miscarried at 15 weeks, Savita was 17 weeks I believe, I can relate, I lost a lot of blood and had to go to theatre for a D&C, thankfully infection never happened for me but it was a horrific thing to go through especially pain wise so I have plenty to say on this incident whether you like it or not! Unfortunately religion does come into it as being a catholic country was one of the reasons stated by Mr Halappanavar as to why Savita couldn’t be giving an absorption/D&C as a heartbeat was detected in the dying foetus. You seem to be very misinformed on this matter.

Your not fully informed either, NONE of us are except the people in the hospital the Halapanaver’s and the committee undertaking the report.
You like thousands of women in the country had a pregnancy loss a very sad time and you had a safe operation you like thousands of other women on this island catholic/Muslim/Hindi/aethesit or agnostic have lived so dont sensationalise the situation like you did in the first comment no one is left to die in hospitals in this country.

Probably not as it would be just one of many tragic obstetric deaths unlike here where it stood out like a sore thumb because Ireland has a better health service. Also it became a media circus and the general consensus became she was left to die which only fed the hunger for information.

Well he’s done a fair bit of stage management and PR himself. This entire debate needs to be approached in a methodical, logical way. Managing the flow of information mitigates against knee jerk reactions and its too important an issue for that.

But the media is just clouding the whole issue. – I thought the leak of the initial draft to the Evening Herald was very disrespectful, and not helpful to the overall debate.
