Nelson Mandela 'comfortable and responding to treatment'

The former SA president is now breathing without difficulty.

SOUTH AFRICA’S FORMER president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela is responding to treatment for pneumonia but remains in hospital, current leader Jacob Zuma said today.

In an update on the 94-year-old’s condition, the presidency acknowledged and thanked those who have been praying and sending messages of support to Madiba, referring to the country’s first black president by his tribal name.

Mandela was admitted to hospital on Wednesday due to a recurrence of pneumonia and has now spent three nights being treated for the lung infection. He has been hospitalised several times in recent months with lung-related problems.

Doctors advised that due to the lung infection, the patient developed a pleural effusion which was tapped.

“This has resulted in him now being able to breathe without difficulty. He continues to respond to treatment and is comfortable,” continued the statement.

Earlier this week, President Zuma urged calm, telling the BBC: “The country must not panic, Madiba is fine.”

Sunderland Football Club in England has declared today Nelson Mandela Day to mark its recent collaboration with the leader’s foundation.

Half a billion animals have died so far. These bushfires will see the end to many species. It’s unprecedented. The devastation to all of the communities wiped out, reading stories of masses of people staying on beaches so that they can easily jump into the water is absolutely frightening. All we can hope for is rain and a drop in temperatures. As many experts have said, nature started this fire, nature will end it.

@Sirius: And the thing is its only getting started, sooner or later they will figure out burning coal is not a good idea and there is a good chance the country will be one very large desert in the future….they have been warned like us all, its up to them to make the change.

Whoever or whatever is to blame …..seeing and hearing about the animals breaks my heart.
I saw a picture today of a dead kangaroo. Burnt alive, trapped in a fenced area. I think it will haunt me forever :(

    This is a tragedy.

@moneymaid: Oh no :( I feel the same. Humans can leave their houses to escape to safety but the animals can’t. It’s awful.
