A photo of the Gorse fires raging in Co Galway last night. Submitted by reader Robert O'Dolan. Robert O'Dolan

Galway gorse fires brought under control following overnight evacuations

Fires have burnt in several separate areas around Co Galway, when some homes were evacuated as a precaution.

SEVERAL SEPARATE GORSE fires in Co Galway have been brought under control this morning after raging throughout the night.

A number of fires had broken out in Spiddal and surrounding areas, as well as close to Oranmore.

Fires are continuing in the Spiddal-Moycullen area, and outside Oranmore, but a spokesperson for Galway County Council’s fire service said those fires no longer posed a danger.

Crews had worked through the night to contain the separate isolated fires.

A fire is continuing in the Furbogh area, between Spiddal and Barna, and some units of the fire service remain in place there.

Homes in some parts of the county had been evacuated as a precautionary measure, but the spokesman said any evacuation orders had since been lifted and that no homes were currently being evacuated.

Galway and parts of the west coast have seen sustained dry and cold weather over the last few days, leaving rural areas particularly vulnerable to fires.

Fair play to them. I hope they make a few quid.

If I had credit on my iTunes account I’d be spending it on this. But because I don’t, I’ll just have to wait for pay day :/ ugh

No link in the article to the app, likewise on their site & can’t find it in the play store… great idea, but please make it easier to download. I’m still at a loss.

Oh, sorry, we’ve a slight hitch on the android version which is being ironed out. It will be available by the end of the week. Apologies, trying our best on a tiny budget!

Great idea, fair play to the lads.

But…. If people, especially tourists, use it as they are in the location, which I’m assuming is the idea… I can just imagine that map with the dots being the new high risk areas to get your phone swiped out of your hand!

Not begrudging the great idea.. Just saying is all!!

Great idea – Dublin band The Pale did something similar for their last album, https://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/the-pale-i-woke-up-and-i-was-gone/id473266441?mt=8 (disclosure I helped them a bit with it). Love the concept of Dublin folk talking about their city and walking tours of those locations – both apps have unearthed a few gems for me
