Nelson Mandela discharged from hospital

The 94-year-old will now receive home-based care.

FORMER SOUTH AFRICAN President and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital after a 10-night stay.

The country’s presidency office said the 94-year-old’s general condition has gradually improved. He had been admitted to hospital for treatment for recurring lung problems.

He will now receive “home-based high care”, according to a statement.

Current president Jacob Zuma thanked the “hard working medical team and hospital staff for looking after Madiba so efficiently”, referring to the country’s first black leader by his tribal name.

He also extended his gratitude to all South Africans and “friends of the Republic” in Africa and around the world for support.

Mandela has been hospitalised several times in recent months and people across South Africa have been offering up prayers for the former president.

After decades of activism, Madiba stepped down from politics in 1999.

His lung problems date back to 1988 when he was diagnosed with early-stage tuberculosis while incarcerated in apartheid jails.

Nelson Mandela ‘comfortable and responding to treatment’
