RTÉ IS SET to launch a brand new digital channel just for children.
RTÉjr will broadcast on TV (Sky, UPC and Saorview), radio, online and mobile from around 7am to 7pm daily.
The channel has been created specifically for the 0-7 age group.
In a statement, RTÉ said the new service “is a demonstration of RTÉ’s commitment to the 0-7 age group in particular and is part of a phased three-year strategy in the development of services for children by RTÉ”.
The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald, RTÉ’s Director General Noel Curran, RTÉ’s Cross Divisional Head of Children’s Content Sheila de Courcy and RTÉ presenters from TV and Radio will help launch the new channel on 15 April.

Yeah, hasn’t it been going since we went digital?
I’m hoping the launch means new content. It’s on a 2 hour loop all day long, and all the cartoons are repeats. Poor Eedie McCreedie is still putting videos in her VCR to show us all about her travels.
Is she the teacher one? I always thought she looked like she’d be freaky in the sack.

Not on Sky. I live abroad and have been waiting for this. I am thrilled. My kids can watch all the UK / Disney kids stuff. I am really hoping for irish presenters and Irish made TV with real Irish accents.
So this is what the planned Internet tax is paying for!
yeah its on soarview. but dont hold yer breath its programming don’t start till 9am when the kids have gone to school. bloody waste of time
It’s on saoireview but its not on sky or upc I think.
Michelle. you wont be able to get the RTE channels outside of Ireland as SKY do not have the right to broadcast them in UK, unless you subscribe to Irish SKY

Nothing will ever beat The Den and I mean with Ray D’arcy,Dustin,Zuppy and Socky..coming home from school watching Round the twist,The Girl from tomorrow,The shaggy Dog and watching other kids play The Yes/No gameshow and trying to convince Ray through the telly that there was an evil puppet called Rodge behind him….good times :)
Hours and hours of endless Dora
Na. No dora the explorer i am afraid. Timmy time, 3rd and bird, mike the knight, fireman sam, lifeboat luke, octonauts etc etc. Its a good channel. Emma o driscoll from the group 6 along with her furry friend Ogie. And a very talented guy called Ruben and his friend Bo. Rte do good kids tv. But its mostly shows that are on cbeebies. Not a lot of home made stuff.
Dunno why they dont show Wanderly Wagon or Bosco..
Jakers needs to be on too. Hilarious Irish made (I think)cartoon.
It will still be better than that crap that tv3 broadcast.

Not really to be honest. To be fair RTE as a whole has made a pretty good stab at the digital thing.

Any explanation how RTÉJr will be broadcast on radio?
And where is it accessable on mobile?
On radio, it’s http://www.rte.ie. It’s a digital channel, so only available on the Internet or digital radio, not your normal fm. On your phone you can use the rte radio player app or other radio apps like Tune-in
It would be great to have a Irish channel that has programmes suitable for a two year old . Programmes with people who talk, sing and read stories . And before the oh my god that’s your job brigade get on my case I do these things also , but I am sure my son would love to watch a program with lots of colour and entertainment . Tv can be educational .
Ugh they’ll probably use this as an excuse to increase the licence fee .
RTE JR has been broadcasting for over a year. My daughters got a new tv from Santa for Xmas 2011 and it tuned in with the rest of the digital channels.
i believe that this a dedicated channel that stands on its own feet, upto now it was just a recast for RTE 2. Fron now on RTE2 will show different prgrams than RTE JR.

I’d seriously hope that’s some sort of number/marketing gimmick fail because infants don’t need TV >.>
If its going to be riddled with adverts then I’ll stick to CBeebies thanks very much. Its scary how just a short exposure to adverts can make my 4 & 5 yr olds parrot marketing phrases and begin to refer to things by branded names. My 4yo watched me use an antiseptic counter spray in the kitchen and releasing it was a spray bottle she asked me ‘Did you wash it with Fbreeze?’ and that was instantly the end of their brief love affair with Nick Jnr!
This isn’t a new channel. It’s increasing its existing broadcasting hours.
Before it was a recast of RTE 2. It is now its own channel with its own programs
