'You will not beat us into submission' - man (73) pens anti-property tax letter

The letter from the 73-year-old says he will “take revenge” if there is any interference with his pension.

AN ANGRY LETTER purportedly written by a pensioner and sent to Revenue about the property tax has gone viral.

The unnamed 73-year-old – who, according to one Facebook member is her grandfather – dated the letter 8 March and according to various internet sites it was sent to Revenue.

The letter has received 3,738 likes and been shared 2,648 times on one Facebook page alone.

In the somewhat upsetting read, the author details why he will not pay the “unjust” tax, saying he has “f*** all more to give or to lose”. He goes on:

I have nothing more to give except my life but before I give that up I will take as many of you b******s with me as I can.

Does the old man realise that his pension is being paid for by borrowed money from the Troika?

It doesn’t matter that he refuses to pay. The tax will simply stay with the house and accumulate penalties, and will be taken off whenever the ownership is transferred.

I heard ‘Age Action’ (or a similar group can’t remember) telling elderly who cannot pay property tax, not to. The claw back occurs when house is sold, which in the case of the elderly will most likely only occur when it is someone else’s problem. Don’t be hungry/cold for the sake of a property tax – leave it to ur benefactors to sort.

Patrick, can you answer why you think this letter is genuine?

A national newspaper will not publish a letter without verifying the sender’s name and address and telephone number, details which are then published.

The fact is anyone could have penned this letter.

Joe, do you realise that man paid into the national pension fund.
His generation paid for the pylons, the drainage, the railway lines, the water system and that’s just for starters.
He paid 60 pence in the pound to the state, building a state to be proud of.
The mismanagement of his legacy disgusts me.
Everything they slaved for is gone, and for what?
To pay the gambling debts of a handful of addicts.
Dress it up how you want, that’s the sad reality of it.

Haha, a national newspaper. Don’t kid yourself, lad. The only papers we have in that country are owned by Denis O’Brien and the O’Reilly clan and they’ll never publish the dissent of the common man with their tight links to FG and FF. Anyway, newspapers are going the same way of the telegram.

The Journal is a more than reputable media outlet, more so than the brainwashing your receive from RTÉ. The man’s identity is just being protected for reasons only he and the publisher know.

Little Jim – Building a State to be proud? His generation put Fianna Fail in power for 61 of the last 79 years, a party whose economic war with Britain stagnated development in this country for decades leading to mass emigration, and which subsequently shamelessly destroyed this country and brought in the IMF when it ran out of money, to it’s eternal shame. This hypothetical man is looked after now with a State pension, free travel, free healthcare, free medicines, etc.

I’m not sure why he’s so angry, he’s certainly not sharing the same burden as young people in massive negative equity who will be carrying massive debts with them for the next 30 years of their lives, paying massive income taxes and other charges, and whose only mistake was believing their government ministers and the incessant Fianna Fail mantra that if they didn’t get on the property ladder now, they would forever be left behind.

@ag_mcnamh if age action said that then they are wrong. People are only entitled to a deferral only if 1) they are within the income limits agreed by the Revenue i.e. 15,000 for a single person, 25,000 for a couple and 2) apply to the revenue for this deferral. The elderly will not be treated any differently to anyone else in this regard. So if for example an elderly widow on 16,000 but in a nice house in Dublin feels she cannot afford the 600 or 700 annual charge she can not just decide not to pay it and leave it to her excecutors to sort out. She will be persecuted, prosecuted and criminalized like everyone else. They will not wait until she dies.

    Paul,

Refusing to register or pay the Property (Home) Tax is not a criminal offence unlike the Household Charge last year where it was a summary offence. The government have learned some lessons from that debacle and the last thing they want are incendiary court cases where hard pressed citizens are prosecuted.
People should refuse to engage with the Revenue and force them to deduct it at source as a protest against this unjust tax. It is quite likely that Labour will crack and leave government if widespread deductions from peoples’ wages etc do occur as this is a recipe for industrial action and mass civil disobedience. Boycott the Home Tax and bring down the government.

My Grandad wrote this letter…Billy Cleary….and he definitely didn’t vote for Fianna Fáil!!He’s angry because he worked his whole life for nothing only to have everything taken from him time and time again…I seen this firsthand!! Now why can’t he and the other pensioners of the country, who have all already paid their dues, have to pay for the mistakes of the politicians and bankers? I can tell you it’s not their generation of politicians sitting up there now! Why does my Grandad and every pensioner in this country not deserve the chance to enjoy their golden years?Every one of them has paid enough!! Why don’t you try and support your fellow countrymen and be happy someone is speaking up and trying to fight back and help this country, instead of begrudging people. And for your information…We are trying to prevent the “carrying of massive debts for the next 30 years” …that’s what the whole point of this fight against property taz is!!!

You’ve missed the point – apart from the fact that in deferring you incur a 4% interest fee, the point is that this tax is unjust, as stated by Enda Kenny in 1994, and as stated by groups supporting the underpriveleged of this country. The tax is inequitable, people have already paid heavy taxes for their homes, especially those who bought or built in the last 15 years, and it is purely a revenue collecting exercise aimed at paying off the bondholders who brought this country to it’s knees. A deferrment is not an exemption and people have the right to expect the security of their own home, and to be able to pass this home on in whatever way they wish – not to have it confiscated by revenue to cover a bill which never should have existed

I for one would like to shake your grandfathers hand. At least he had the nut to something and stick to his guns. Sadly his experience is far from isolated. A member of my family worked hard for nearly 50 years only to have her pension lost on the property market when she was less than 6years from retirement age. Needless to say this has caused her untold stress anxiety, sleepless nights etc. And its far from confined to the elderly.

Peace out, and keep up the good fight,

    Paul,

There is no €5000 fine for not registering for the Property tax and neither is it a criminal offence. The maximum penalty that anyone will pay is a doubling of the tax liability and an 8% interest charge of 8% per annum.
So if your Home tax was €100 now and the Revenue were able to enforce collection in 2014, they would charge you €208.
It is not clear whether the Revenue will have the power to deduct any penalties at source without going to court and if that is the case you lose nothing by making them come and take it if they can. They will not be able to take hundreds of thousands of people to court as the Household tax campaign last year demonstrated.
Don’t let the government propaganda scare you into submission.

CAPTA , the Campaign Against Property Tax and Austerity (formerly the anti Household tax campaign) is organising the fight against this unjust tax and the austerity program generally being imposed on the Irish people to pay for the socialisation of banking debt. Please go along to your local meetings and get involved.

Coddler I think you’re referring to the household charge which is as you say only doubled by July 1st or whenever. Part 14 of the LPT Bill clearly spells out the fines regarding non registering and non payment of the Property Tax which seem to be 3,000. Also it’s not correct to say that you’ve nothing else to lose except for the interest and the fines as you have to pay the court costs. If the cretins hadn’t all paid the HC of course we wouldn’t have had to worry about any of this.

The fact that he was compelled by passion to write this letter is an indictment of this society and of its governance.

I take it that you cavil only with the your literal understanding of his rhetoric and accept the criticisms which he has eloquently expressed.

He has worked longer years than I have, received less from Ireland than I have, contributed more than I have and he deserves to be left alone. If this man’s pension is touched,I suspect that he will have immense support in his opposition to such attack.

As I said before unless citizens demonstrate and take a stance Government won’t get the message. This citizen in prepared to get off his knees and take direct action which he can justify morally . Unlike the rest of us he is not harking back to the security of his chains! However, he DOES have a lot to give his country and his letter is a noble way of proving that. Good luck to him and those like him.

    Yoman,

I wouldn’t object to a fair and progressive Property tax which factored in an ability to pay and where the revenue gathered was directed to benefit the local community. This crude Home tax however meets none of those criteria and is in fact a deeply unfair levy on the Irish people in order to pay for the failure of speculative financial capitalism.
CAPTA , the Campaign Against Property Tax and Austerity (formerly the anti Household tax campaign) is organising the fight against this unjust tax and the austerity program generally being imposed on the Irish people to pay for the socialisation of banking debt. Please go along to your local meetings and get involved.

Yoman, Its called a local property tax to imply that the proceeds will be spent locally. They won’t. We didn’t nationalise the banks, we nationalised their debts. The property tax, the water taxes and all the other taxes and cutbacks in the austerity program are to pay for this tranfer of private illegitimate banking debt to the people.

Sorry Coddler, any Family Home tax, anywhere is wrong. Its where kids live! …you know!

    1. It is not a property tax – land > 1 acre incl farms is excluded.
    2. It is not a wealth tax – family homes dont earn revenue streams
    3. It is not an asset tax – cant liquidate family home – no where to live.
    4. It is a “Fodder tax” – treat you like plebs and tax you with most repressive legislation.

see Honohans paper on Financial Transaction tax … deemed not viable .. he would wouldnt he!

I don’t know if you lot have left your morals somewhere back along the line, but I am really disappointed at the amount of you championing his message of threatened violence. By all means do not pay, and protest. But if this man inflicts any physical harm to anyone while pursuing this campaign of non-payment, then he is no better than the people that he condemns.

And Seamus, you’re saying that you don’t know what he’s exactly talking about, but you still back him? That’s utter shite! How can you agree with someone when you don’t know what their point is?

    @Jim Hanley

    Hi jim
Right and wrong is completely subjective. What you and I find right and wrong obviously is not the same. I believe that if you try to placate the schoolyard bully he will only continue to taunt you. I believe it is right in that situation to fight back and destroy him. There is no point in standing up for what is right if you don’t actually make a stand for what is right. I am going to try to put this into a relevant context for you. Lets say your girlfriend was being attacked in front of you. Would it be right to us violence to protect her. Would you ask nicely to please mister don’t hurt her or would you use violence to protect her. Which one do you think would be most effective in achieving the goal. Yea by all means try to ask nicely however should the violence continue I think you would be right to use a proportional amount of force to end said violence. The government has made a concerted effort to steal people’s money. They have gone from being a government for the people to a government that is oppressing the people. Not being able to directly sequester the means of production ie slave camps they have decided that they are going after the fruits of the means of production. The soviet union tried to do this a long time ago by taking farmers horses with the result that the farmers shot and ate the horses rather then hand them over.
Should the government have the ability and they now do to take directly from peoples bank accounts wages pensions and social welfare payments then how exactly is one supposed to protest. The government has backed people into a corner and left them with no choice. They do not seem to understand that although they seem intent on handing the entire states money over to Germany that people have to live. At the moment personally speaking I would rather go to prison then pay this tax however even that option has been ruled out but out glorious furher.
As for me not knowing what this guy will do yea I don’t I do however know exactly what he is trying to do. He recognizes a tyrant when he sees it and is attempting to stop him. Whatever he does to “take down as many of the b…tads as possible” I am behind him, this is not sh..e as you so eloquently put it is fact. If the thought of suicide bombers self immolation’s or any other form of what you seem to call extreme protest seems barbaric to you maybe you should not leave your house until all this blows over. The facts are that there are hordes of very very angry people ready willing and able to perform said acts and all it is going to take Is one spark to set them off. At times like this I am reminded of the following words. “give me freedom or give me death” “He who would trade liberty for peace deserves neither and will lose both”

    Dear 73 year old

I am sorry for your plight but I find your story fascinating and wonder can you expand it a little further .

You say you bought your present home 9 years ago at the age of 64 and paid over 800,000 in cash for it
at 64 you were never going to get a bank loan for it ( I.E 7,000 in stamp duty ) . That is alot of money for a man living on the state contributory pension of 280 euro per week to shell out on a house
.Must people at that age tend to scale down but maybe you have from somewhere like Aylsbury road who knows .
The good news for you is AT 73 if all you are living on the Old age pension and have no other means you can defer paying the property Tax until you pop your clogs or sell that nice home of yours .
The best of luck but at this stage my heart strings are not really been pulled

If more people made a stand, we wouldn’t be here now, we wouldn’t still be here taking whatever the government sends our way.

So have I and its not pleasant however an old man sending a letter to the people who deal with property tax and getting his granddaughter to post it online got the attention he obviously wanted and have his voice heard.

Do you really think if he had sent the letter to Enda Kenny he would have bothered to open, read, reply and act? Not a chance.

Personally I think we all need to embrace anyone who stands up to them, the more the better, because somehow I doubt this is the end of the government f’ing us over.

If your first reaction to that letter was the staff at the revenue then maybe that particular tax has not affected you but their next measure may, and I’m sure you’d like support if you wanted to say no!

Also if you apply the logic of your negative equity comment to another asset let’s just say cash. Well then its buying power would never change leading to hyperinflation as a result. Negative equity is a mentality that has no bearing on this tax as it only considers current value and not the negative equity portion of its liability

The government makes it very easy for me to own a home which i am delighted about. suddenly the value drops in the housing market. Due to me not doing adequate research on the fundamental value of property i am now in negative equity in my home i couldnt afford in the first place. The government then brings in a tax which should have been brought in in previous years which is to be paid on the value of the market now and not the ridiculous price i couldnt afford in the first place. Now all i do is whinge whinge whinge on forums like the Journal instead of using my time to do something productive and get me and my family out of this mess.

Oh sorry Ryan was it the regulators who forced you to buy that house 3 times the value you could afford at the time? people were more than happy to avail of the cheap credit at the time. Cross border banking isn’t the issue here, the issue is people having to pull up there socks and face reality that the property tax is a tax which needs to be paid and is a fair tax based on the value of property now. Be thankful its not based on the sale price of the house you bought. when i return home from work at 7 each evening and take an hour or so to read the journal its the same names coming up spewing the same nonsense instead of being out doing something productive. Improving their spelling and grammar would be one route they could take.

Agree at 100%. There is a very simple thing that people must do before applying for mortgage and loans. If the repayment are more than a 1/3 of ur total incomes then dont get the loan/mortgage (this include outstanding loans too). It means you cant afford it. A house which cannot be covered by 3 years income is just a house that you cannot afford.

@Norman, Head into town and buy and economics book for yourself and update your intelligence on the matter. Heres a simple lesson. Government expenditure (soicla welfare, upkeep of roads and infrastructure, grants for business) must equal Government revenue (taxes ) without an adequate tax revenue the government would have to run a government deficit which is bad for the economy even further with less spending will occur in the following year. In a recession you need to work counter cyclical in your budget by lowering taxes and increasing spending however due to inadequate revenue received Ireland cannot run a counter cyclical budget. Whinge all you like.

Thanks factualfrank for this little economical lesson. I have a master in economics and speaks 3 languages. My point was that asking for a direct return from your taxes is stupid. Property tax is a tax on assets and its added to a big pot called revenue. If you agree that the gvt needs some sort of revenue to fund their needs then you will be happy to pay this tax

Sorry Doesnotcompute – but your contention that someone who would have bought a home at the height of the property bubble would have “equity” in their property …. Well I’m sorry to have to advise you, that had you done so …. You are most probably sitting on negative equity , my friend , of between 50/70% ….. Surprise !!!!

Paying Property Tax after paying top whack Stamp Duty rates , makes for very uncomfortable reading this evening.
Someone who has paid already say €8,000 Government Stamp Duty Tax , has already paid about 25years of the average Property Tax on a property with NEGATIVE EQUITY .

Shocking double whammy of Tax Robbery by our present Government !

People stop being keybord warriors. Vast majority of people got 97-100% mortgage with extra top up for the new car/brand new kitchen/holidays etc.. Bank were wrong to give those mortgage but people were stupid to accept them. We need some sort of tax in order to clean up the mess and restart well. Since when you have to get something else from tax anyway? I pay tax on my savings, VAT, motor tax, stamp duty on my credit card and what do I get in return? Nothing! I know times are hard for some people but we must have some sort of level of tax in this country.

If money is coming back, the vast majority will simply forget their left wing socialism adventure (most of European left wings party will agree on property taxes by the way, as they see properties as a assets)

Also the house that was sold was the family house ( which was falling apart ) , was sold to a local developer because of plans to improve the town center ,plan’s which ground to a halt . The house was sold for less than 280,000 and the new house ( previously owned ) was bought for 165,000 . It was bought outright with no mortgage .

The people inside Dublin Castle next Saturday will all be looking after their own vested interests, be they Irish politicians who should rightly be regarded as traitors, or foreign mercenaries who are here to steal from the people of Ireland. For 800 years Dublin Castle was the seat of English power in Ireland. How appropriate that these latest invaders should also choose this castle to inflict pain and suffering and hardship on Irish people, while feasting on the finest food and wine that money can buy. Different invader, same tyranny. For Enda Kenny read Diarmait Mac Murchadha.

Many Pensioners voted Fianna Fail and supported the government that created the bubble, the mess and the guarantee that sank the state.

Furthermore, they spent a life time passively allowing Ireland building itself as a poorly managed unregulated house of cards and doing little to get involved in creating a better Republic.

Now the younger generation are having to fork out to pay for the recovery, and the Pensioners expect a clap on the back because at long last they want to complain when they could have been more pro-active citizens for 6 decades?

The people of Galway City and County are invited to attend their weekly, family friendly march every Sunday from the Cathedral to Eyre Square, until further notice. The aim is to bring as many ordinary decent people together, for whatever reason they hold close to their hearts, be it bondholder bailouts, reduced services, forced emigration etc.

Please be aware, this is not for any particular group, party or reason exclusively and although everybody is welcome to attend, there will not be one particular agenda, which has in the past discouraged some individuals or groups from taking part. We will gather from 12 midday in front of the Cathedral every Sunday and would love to see you all there.

PS placards, signs, banners etc are of course encouraged to highlight your issue but are in no way essential.

Ah come on folks. This is getting like troll town here and the infighting, discord and sniping between ourselves only helps those we all oppose. What is the point of all of this argument about the details when, as far as I can make out we all agree the tax is incredibly wrong? We need to stop fighting about whether or not this letter is authentic and either agree upon a strategy of opposition. If, as most people feel, you agree that those who were responsible should be made to pay you should refuse to register, don’t pay and get involved in groups opposing the tax. Real opposition will never come about through you all taking shots at each other.

That said, I think the letter is almost certainly a fake. If the guy was really that angry why would he not do it under his own name. Without it the letter becomes about as valid as the comments here by people using psuedonyms.

The fact that it seems to have made its first appearance on Facebook more or less clinches the matter – 99.99% of such posts on that site are fakes. It was probably written by a twenty-something in a PR agency in his/her spare time. If it is genuine why doesn’t the writer come forward? – it would only result in extra publicity for his cause. In the meantime I shall remain sceptical.

It is odd that so many read the rhetorical threats in a literal way. The “threats”, if you can sensibly describe them as such, are an expression of anger and determination.

It is the substance of the letter, the core message, which needs to be considered.

Many Irish people are timid, subservient to authority, right of centre and even supine. Fierceness, assertiveness and strong passion unsettle the more compliant who seem resigned to increasing misery.

If we are accepting of these cumulative taxes, the Government will be even more insatiable in its demands. The Government needs to satisfy the Troika so as to be able enjoy actual payment of munificent pensions.

For all of you that keep thinking that this letter is a fake , I will tell you here and now that it is 100% genuine , it was published in the Westmeath Topic in the beginning of March . Also the house that was sold was the family house ( which was falling apart ) , was sold to a local developer because of plans to improve the town center ,plan’s which ground to a halt . The house was sold for less than 280,000 and the new house ( previously owned ) was bought for 165,000 . It was bought outright with no mortgage .Also he was interveiwed on the Joan Lea show on 98 FM TONIGHT. They even state that fact on their Facebook page.
