Pakistani Taliban say they are not responsible for Boston bombing

“We believe in attacking [the] US and its allies but we are not involved in this attack.”

THE PAKISTANI TALIBAN, which claimed the 2010 Times Square bomb plot, has today denied anything to do with explosions that killed three people and wounded more than 100 in Boston.

“We believe in attacking US and its allies but we are not involved in this attack,” Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP.

“We have no connection to this bombing but we will continue to target them wherever possible,” Ehsan added.

Monday’s explosions at the Boston Marathon, one of America’s top sporting events, forced cities from New York to Los Angeles to go on high alert and conjured up memories of the September 11 2001 attacks.

The Pakistani government said the country was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the Boston attack.

“The government of Pakistan condemns this heinous act of terrorism in the strongest possible terms and hopes that the perpetrators of this barbaric act will be brought to justice,” said a statement issued by the foreign ministry.

An internet video purportedly from the TTP claimed responsibility for a car bomb attempt in New York’s Times Square on 1 May 2010, for which Pakistani-American Faisal Shahzad was jailed for life.

A TTP spokesman later denied that the faction had trained or recruited Shahzad.

Shahzad said during his trial that he received bomb-making training during a 40-day stay with the Pakistani Taliban, but that on his return to the United States he planned the bombing and acted alone.

He was also shown in a video embracing Hakimullah Mehsud, commander of the TTP, who has vowed to attack major US cities.

The TTP is based in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt on the Afghan border and has been blamed for some of the deadliest suicide attacks in Pakistan.

US President Barack Obama warned against “jumping to conclusions” but a senior White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said such an attack was “clearly an act of terror”.

To be fair to the political parties, they adopt public sector standards for recruitment and that includes adds in the national press. There is every chance an applicant could be hired by referral.

In 2014 Irish politics is finally realising the prevalence of the internet and that maybe just maybe the public respond better to Twitter Q&A’s than a grinning eejit on a lampost poster? 10 years behind as always but better late than never.

Prior to trekking out to vote in the recent local elections I visited the web sites of each party and independent candidate in the constituency. None of the sites had clearly spelled-out and costed policies, the focus was on aspirations and populist messages with the Greens and SF being the biggest offenders. But Fine Gael did have some short videos that were better and more professional than the other parties. That they had made the effort to properly inform the internet generation was the factor which persuaded me to give FG my number 1.
I look forward to seeing what FF produce.

    Independents Day:
Political Parties are just private clubs who pass Pro-Lobby Laws not Pro-Citizen laws. FF/ Greens annual Car Tax Law case in point. A most blatantly regressive “Pro-Lobby” law that makes those who can’t afford new cars subsidise the wealthy who can. €951 per annum road tax for a 10 yr old car while a new equivalent is just €280. Ireland a disgusting place to live. Social Media is a powerful force to enlighten voters (not just for Tunisia, Libya and Egypt!) and ensure they bring their brains to the Polling Booths and put an end to these private “lobby” clubs.
