The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #SAVITA: The jury at the inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar has returned a unanimous verdict of medical misadventure. Halappanavar was found to have died of septic shock, E.coli in the bloodstream and a miscarriage at 17 weeks.

Following the verdict, Praveen Halappanavar said that his wife had been treated in a “barbaric, inhumane way” and that “she was just left there to die”.

2. #GUIDELINES: The jury at the inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar have “strongly endorsed” the nine guidelines that had been recommended by the coroner in the case. These include a number of national recommendations which have been put forward in a bid to prevent any similar cases occurring in future.

3. #BOSTON: The police search for the second of the Boston Marathon bombers is continuing. One police officer was shot dead and another was wounded in a violent shootout led by the two men overnight that has left much of the Boston region – an area with roughly 900,000 people – in lockdown. 19 year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, whose brother was killed in the earlier shootout, remains at large and is “armed and dangerous”.

4. #IVOR CALLELY: Former Fianna Fáil TD and Senator Ivor Callely appeared in court earlier today, charged with six counts of presenting fraudulent receipts to claim expenses. The charges relate to four receipts allegedly submitted by Callely in November 2007, with dates between 2002 and 2006, with the letterhead of Business Communications Ltd – a company which had actually ceased trading in 1994.

5. #NAMA: Receivers have been appointed to the companies behind the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and and the Point Village complex. TheJournal.ie understands that receivers from Grant Thornton were appointed to the companies, originally controlled by businessman Harry Crosbie, by the National Asset Management Agency.

It’s not just a weight issue in advertising…Women are constantly being told they have to be tall, have hairless bodies (except on their heads which have to be perfectly coiffed!), be dressed up all the time, have so much make-up on that it flattens their features and removes any sort of character…there’s so much pressure on people to look one. particular. way. As long as we, as a society, just put up with it(essentially encouraging it) we are going to continue seeing eating disorders, self esteem issues, self harming, body dysmorphia etc. Now I don’t agree with her on “Creators only want androgynous body shapes. They don’t want to rejoice in a woman’s body,”…Women can be adrogynous, and that’s their body. Doesn’t make them any less of a Woman.

Couldn’t agree more, removing character is hitting the nail on the head, honestly, between the hair extensions, false eyelashes, false nails, false tan & face contouring they are all trying to look the same. Different is good, just be your beautiful self

Yup! And it’s all for money, folks. That multi-billion Euro industry only exists to make money, they don’t care how many lives they ruin in the process. We all have something that’s unique about us that, if it wasn’t for these images being blasted at us, we would embrace and be proud of. So sad that it doesn’t occur to most that they are perfectly fine in their natural state. When you see girls as young as 5 with eating disorders thinking that they are ”ugly”, it breaks your heart.

Ladies, while we are discussing the serious issues facing teenage girls, do you find it very concerning that sexual assaults perpetrated by two separate ‘groups’ in Tallaght during the week have for some strange reason gone largely under the radar. I find it very odd how little concern is being shown by gang attacks on young girls, and even more strange that the Garda have not issued a description of the attackers in order for help with their identification

The people that insist that the extreme skinny look is attractive or what is needed to be a supermodel need medical advice in my opinion. A lot of these women have similar shapes to children. How is it acceptable to imply that the shape of a female child is what’s needed to be a supermodel and to sell clothes. It beggars belief.

By mocking those with very slim physiques you are being really hypocritical. We shouldn’t be saying anything negative about *anyone’s* body full stop. People’s bodies shouldn’t be up for discussion at all except with their doctors. To say that an adult female has the body of a child is horrible…like something you would hear from a pack of children in the school yard. I happen to be very, very thin as are most of my family…we find it impossible to put on weight. You’re saying that our bodies are not ‘acceptable’, we are not ‘attractive’, that we look like children…there’s no need for that. You wouldn’t say things in that vein about heavy people I bet?

Christmas carol, not at all what I meant. She clearly says that she ate three apples a day to get that thin. That’s not normal. I’m by no means mistaking it with naturally thin people. A college girlfriend of mine many moons ago was 6 “stone” and ate like a man. It upset her that she couldn’t gain a few kg’s because she was sick of people thinking she had a problem. It’s as bad as the power lifters etc, force feeding themselves to get huge.

I remember watching a documentary about the Irish jockey Richard Hughes a while back who was at the top of his profession at the time.
He had spent the night in bed wearing a sweat suit, gloves, hat, with a couple of duvets over him and the electric blanket on all night in order to shed a few pounds.
He rose at 5 am, went to the stables and rode out a couple of horses, came home at 7 am, into the sauna for an hour, drove 4 hours to the racecourse, rode 6 horses in the afternoon, then a few hours to an evening meeting to tide more horses, drove back home and into bed.
    The interviewer asked him:
What have you eaten all day Richard?
A Mars bar and a cup of tea.
A model has to walk a couple of yards down a runway and she’s complaining.
Demonstrates the difference in attitude between men and women when it comes to making sacrifices in a chosen career.
Men say nothing and get on with it.

Oran, all this comment demonstrates is that you’re completely ignorant. Do you realise that there are male models too? And there is huge pressure on them to look a certain way too, which icludes maintaining a low weight? This is not just a female problem, but because of the world we live in Women are usually the ones who are under pressure to look a certain way. They are the ones being sold all these ”beauty” products etc. The statistic above illustrates this perfectly- ‘Between 30,000 and 40,000 people in France suffer from anorexia, 90% OF THEM WOMEN.’ Also, there is a logic to jockeys being small and thin, not so much logic in models being very tall and thin. You have to be naturally slim to be a jockey and if the day comes that you find yourself starving/harming your body for the sake of it then that’s the day to walk away and find another career.

Possibly. To be honest, I think a lot of these celebrities and models who claim to have anorexia, actually don’t. As I said, there’s a big difference between the illness, anorexia, and somebody who restricts their intake for their career. I

I’ve suffered from anorexia for nearly 30 years, and I assure you, there’s nothing glamorous about it. It’s NOT about wanting to look like a model (although going on a diet to try to be a certain size may trigger it, it doesn’t cause it). It’s a horrible, soul destroying disease that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

    @Carol.
Nobody is putting a gun to anybody’s head are they.
The only reason the modelling business is the focus of so much attention is that it ties in with feminist theory on body shaming.
There are far more physically demanding jobs on the planet than modelling where people are paid far far less.
Usually for something with greater value to society than what dress to wear this autumn.

@Oran Sorry, I know you weren’t. I didn’t mean it to come across as if I thought that.
I think the media often belittles it though; they make it sound like a vanity issue. I haven’t read this model’s book so I can’t comment, I just hope her eating disorder isn’t the usual celebrity’s “I restricted my food. I lost weight. I decided I didn’t like it any more so I started eating again, gained weight and lived happily ever after”. That’s not anorexia. That’s going a bit OTT with the diet. Recovery (if you do actually recover) takes, on average, 5 years.

‘The only reason the modelling business is the focus of so much attention is that it ties in with feminist theory on body shaming.’…what?!! :D :D Well that escalated quickly!
The reason the modelling business is the focus of so much attention is because it goes hand-in-hand with the biggest industry in the world- the fashion industry. This came to it’s peak at the same time the cult of celebrity was really beginning to go crazy- the 90′s…also known as ‘the decade of the Supermodel’. I’ve studied Fashion design, I’ve worked in the industry. I also know a number of people who have suffered with anorexia nervosa, one who is recovering, and I can tell you that it’s far more about control than looking a certain way. If you’re going to have a serious conversation about this then you had better go away and do your research mate, because all I see from your previous comments is that you clearly have something against Women.
    Have a nice day now.

No,she was already a size 8 and tall so her body would of had very little fat to eat/use for energy it would then turn to eating muscle to stay alive, her hair would fall out her periods would stop because her body doesn’t have the energy to give to these function and she’d develope a fine layer of downy hair on her body because shes so cold all the time and the body doesnt have the reserves to keep her warm. You obviously had more starting fat/ weight so your body could easily eat through its fat reserves causing you too loose weight but your end point probably wasnt even close to this girl starting point.so she would be slower to loose what her body is trying to hold on to just to stay alive
