Malala to become honorary member of DIT students' union

Malala Yousufzai grabbed worldwide headlines last year when she survived an attempted assassination in Pakistan’s Swat Valley.

THE PAKISTANI TEENAGER whose activism and subsequent survival from an assassination attempt caught worldwide attention last year is to be given an honorary membership from students at Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).

Malala Yousufzai will be honoured by DIT’s Students’ Union (DITSU) at a ceremony in Dublin on Wednesday evening, eight months after she survived being shot in the head at point-blank range by a Taliban gunman in the Swat Valley.

The attack drew worldwide condemnation and attention to her activism.

Malala began writing a blog when she was 11, charting her life under the Taliban in the Swat Valley and her cause has been taken up by millions worldwide since the shooting.

The 15-year-old has been recovering from her injuries in recent months, undergoing surgery at a hospital in Birmingham, England last year.

She said in February that she had been given a “second life” to campaign for girls to have the right to go to school.

Her honorary membership will be accepted by the deputy head of mission at the Pakistani Embassy in Dublin, Ahmad Hussain Dayo, at a ceremony in Dublin on Wednesday evening at 6.30pm.

She deserves everything and anything, but I’m disgusted by DIT’s cheap publicity stunt.

Didn’t trinity students years back snidely refer to the DIT as the ‘poly tech’! Wonder if that still goes on….

Ah yes, DIT, where all the special kids go. You take the leaving cert applied to a college of further education for two years before doing a three year FETAC level 6 course in DIT.

I believe that particular course is held in high regard by employers as it has such demanding criteria for entry – ability to spell own name with 3 or less mistakes, written vocabulary of at least 15 3 letter words and capability of differentiating between a mouse and a computer mouse.

Of course the most popular course remains introduction to the off button, but this has a higher fail rate.

No the most popular course is still – how to wipe your ass with three sheets of paper. The post grad option is – how to use a bidet.

I thought they discontinued that due to too many injuries? Obviously not. I do know they definitely stopped the – how to switch on a light bulb module as too many of the “students” ingested the light bulbs.

I think they replaced it with – how to chew food with your mouth closed. As you can imagine, it was an unmitigated disaster.
