20 per cent increase in dead animals as fodder crisis deepens

Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney urged farmers to seek help if they cannot cope.

THE NUMBER OF farm animals which have died this spring has increased more than 20 per cent compared to the same period last year as the fodder crisis deepens.

The Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney confirmed the figure in the Dáil as he again urged farmers to seek help if they cannot cope.

Farmers would usually buy enough fodder – dried hay or feed given to cattle and livestock – to last until the spring when the grass begins to grow and animals can begin to eat that instead. However the unexpectedly cold and wet winter and spring means farmers ran out of hay earlier than usual and grass has not grown enough to meet the needs of the animals in many parts of the country.

“No animal should die of starvation in this country and help is available to those farmers who cannot cope,” the Minister told the Dail in response to a question from Fine Gael’s Bernard Durkan.

Minister Coveney said animal mortality is being monitored by the Department of Agriculture on an ongoing basis.

“While access to fodder is an immediate priority, grass growth in the months ahead will be the key to ensuring that this problem is overcome,” he said.

The Government has introduced a €1 million fund to contribute towards the transport costs of importing fodder, which is believed to have cut the cost for farmers by about one third. A consignment of fodder from France was due to arrive in Ireland today.

It’s not just “getting a job” there are plenty of emigrants who can easily get jobs here if they wanted. it’s the paying over 30 taxes a year, exorbitant rents, weather, lifestyle and many actually want to stay away from the families for the best part of the year

Been away for 8 years. I could get a job in Ireland but I Would take home 40% less pay.

This is due to poor Irish salaries and benefits packages and high income tax. Thats too much of a hit to return.

Where are you based? Starting to think that way myself. Run a company on the side, gross €2600, net €1200 or so. Not bloody worth the hassle/stress. Would be better off moving somewhere else, bill the company for my time and pay local taxes. Hard work is NOT rewarded here.

What use is a job when you work damn hard and still can’t afford to live because the parasitic government is constantly devising countless new ways to remove more money from our pockets for absolutely nothing in return? This country is crippled by a parasitic and incredibly corrupt establishment that has held us back since the foundation of the state.

Gave away water rights inc fish, gas and oil for peanuts too. It is disgusting and i will nrever live in my native country again.

Ok Paul, so what’s gonna entice me to stay in a 35k a year new job in Glanbia if I can’t get a place to live? Shedding jobs is going off point because I’m sure most of the people working there have been there years and either have homes or are already long term tennants. I’m referring to people who are back in Ireland now and looking for jobs.

Very mature comments from Hefner. There is no reason that people could not find work. I do understand that people may have struggled to keep a roof over their heads and I commend them for fighting the fight and getting on with things.

About 2008/2009 I was on 150k per annum and then became redundant but instead of feeling sorry for myself I got a job stacking shelves in a supermarket to tie myself over, I made the recovery and got back into a well paid job plus I reeducation myself along the way and obtained a degree.

There is nothing cowardly about going somewhere else to make a better life for your family. It takes guts to do that, go to a different culture, leave your friends and family behind. You would know unless you’ve experienced it. Obviously not.
