With over 5 million journeys made so far, Dublinbikes scheme set for expansion

Twenty-nine new jobs will be created by the expansion.

THE DUBLINBIKES SCHEME is set to be expanded by 58 stations, 950 bikes and around 2,000 bike stands.

Twenty-nine new jobs will be created by the expansion and the new stands will be sited in the west of the city in the Heuston area and to the east in the Docklands area.

Since its introduction, there have been over five million Dublinbikes journeys made and Dublin City Council say they have been inundated with expressions of interest to have the scheme expanded.

“Dublin City Council’s dublinbikes scheme in association with JCDecaux is one of the most successful public bike rental schemes worldwide,” said the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Naoise Ó Muirí, who will put the proposed expansion scheme before the members of Dublin City Council at Monday’s meeting.

“The expanded bike scheme will provide for improved linkages in the city, and will further enhance the reputation of Dublin as a forward thinking and innovative city,” he added.

It is hoped that works will commence this October and be completed during July 2014.

At present there are 33,000 long term Dublinbikes subscribers, with the bikes being used on a daily basis anywhere up to 7,000 time.

I see the fact that the cost of the annual subscription fee being doubled didn’t make the story.

I presume then captain negative that you would also want included that similar schemes around the world are still significantly more expensive that Dublins one. (London city is 90GBP per year, 54AUD per year in Melbourne and 95USD per year in New York)

Actually I’ve asked a lot of people and no one cares! It still a bargin. €20/year instead of €10/year.

Considering the service is being expanded its well worth it.

If it expanded again after next year I would be more than happy to pay double again.

Claran if it doubled their customers would still consider it to be good value compare it to dublin bus luas or a car, but no matter what good thinking and people who invest do their best to keep their charges low some people will always complain Once again long may it last great value and a good news story. On yer bike.

This isn’t third “announcement” of Dublin bike expansion in the last year.

A single station is yet to be added…

Dublin a forward thinking and innovative city. In terms if transport it’s abysmal regardless of a few extra bikes. Dublin’s transport in comparison to other major cities is a joke.

Yes it’s a good scheme. But its expansion will increase the number of idiots cycling on footpaths, through red lights and the wrong way up one way streets. Why can’t Dublin City Council take some responsibility for these stupid people. Give the clampers power to stop and report cyclists who break the law and the DCC can then ban them from using the scheme.

As a cyclist in Cork it irates me to see cyclists mis-using the roads. It also annoys me when other road users hurl abuse at cyclists cycling correctly and safely.
I was fortunate to have been given an education in primary school on safe cycling. The Kent County council went to schools and gave the year 6s a weeks worth of cycling proficiency lessons with a test at the end. I have always maintained that it was invaluable as it helped prepare me for driving a car – I already knew how to read the road.
It would be a wonderful thing if councils here did the same as it would a) help drivers understand cyclists better because they would have learnt the rules of the road, and b) cyclists would be aware of cycle safety. A helmet may protect your head in an accident, but using your head when cycling may prevent the accident from happening.

Yes Jim 100% agree with your post there seems to be no will on the part of the gardai to do their job against pedal power not stopping at red lights or am I missing something ?

I’ve heard if a couple of cyclists getting done by the gards for jumping red lights, and delighted to heat they did. But when you see the cycle gards disobeying the rules of the road will you really take them seriously?

Compare the KSI stats with pedal cycles listed as a cause to those with motor vehicles as the cause and you might get some idea why the Gardaí give the cyclists a bit of leeway.

Why? Apart from annoying you, they harm no one but themselves. They are the vulnerable ones – car drivers should be aware of that and give them more room.

Its great to have for casual users, i mean you would’nt want to depend on them for getting to work or any thing like that. Chances are the bike station will be empty when you want to pick one up and full when you want to leave it back.

I’d settle for a safe place to lock my own bike in Limerick or Cork. Problem is there is nowhere safe to leave a bike in the cities. Dublin has some ground floor carparks set up for bikes – great idea.

Gerri. I am not annoyed.I am angry. I see the dangerous antics of some cyclists every day around the Baggot St. and Fitzwilliam Square cycle stations. They are not the vulnerable. Pedestrians on the footpaths or crossing with a green light who have to dodge them are at risk of a serious accident. And the cyclists who come up the wrong way up one-way streets are a real danger to themselves and other road users.

The Irish indo or times mentioned a price tag of €35M which equates to 36k a bike, sounds a bit daft to me. Surly it would be better if they just left bikes lying around if 99.7% of bikes got lost or stolen it would still be cheaper

€35M is the total cost of construction of stations, the purchasing of the 950 bicycles and by far the most expensive part, the maintenance and constant redistribution of the bicycles around the city for ten years.
