€569 million - Ryanair's profit for last year up 13%

The airline reported the profits despite higher fuel costs, which represents 45 per cent of the companies total costs.

RYANAIR HAS REVEALED a full year profit after tax of €569 million, up 13 per cent on last year.

Revenue rose by 13 per cent to €4.88 billion to the end of March 2013.

Passenger numbers were also up by five per cent to 79.3 million, which the low-cost carrier said helped lead to the profit increase.

The airline reported the profits despite higher oil costs, up by 8 per cent, and an increase in fuel unit costs which rose by 3 per cent, while the average fare improved by 6 per cent. Fuel now represents a 45 per cent of the companies total costs.

Seven new bases were opened by the carrier last year – Chania in Greece, Eindhoven and Maastricht in the Netherlands, Fez in Morocco, Krakow in Poland, Marrakech in Morocco and Zadar in Croatia.

It also started to travel to 217 new routes to now give a total of over 1,600 routes and has a total fleet of 305 after buying 15 new aircrafts last year.

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary welcomed the profit announcement but said they were disappointed that the European Commission in February 2013 decided to prohibit Ryanair’s third offer for Aer Lingus.

Mike – almost all Ryanair planes are registered in Ireland. Even in the past very few were registered outside of Ireland. A few in the UK. The average age an aircraft in the Ryanair fleet is 4.3 years.

Just scrolled up to that lovely photo topping the article. My eyes aren’t the best but even I can see the registration letters EI and the Irish tricolour.
Not too keen on the “bag Nazis” who check suspect oversize bags or the scratchcard selling but cheapness and efficiency are a selling point with me. As regards safety, they seem to have a good record. It’s great to see an Irish company doing so well. A touch of the green-eyed monster in some comments perhaps?

Colin you must be confused. Ireland is very much a tax haven. The 12.5% is just a sign on the door to let the vultures know that it is in fact a tax haven. For example, Google famously paid €15.3m in corporation taxes despite bringing in €10.1bn – I dont have the exact figures but I heard this was the equivalent of a person earning ~€40k/y paying ~€60 tax.

You are incorrect with those figures Jim. Are you referring to the UK issue of google and not Ireland? The corporation tax is the best business decision Ireland ever made! As an Irish man working for an American multinational tech company i would not have job. They would line up in their droves and leave Ireland and its 50k staff behind!

    What?

This man’s ability to ruthlessly exploit his workforce (as we’ve heard recently from cabin staff & pilots) taking full advantage of the desperation of mass unemployment.

By all accounts Ryanair also seems to skate the thinnest of possible lines around the safety regulations too.

Of course another part of these profits is also the fact that once he’s got a big pile of the limited availability routes/destinations sewn up, the fairs can be hiked as well, which is what we’re seeing.

There seems to be some sort of witch hunt every time there’s a Ryanair story on the journal, everything from questioning the safety practices (they’re subject to the same stringent safety rules as every other major airline in Europe) to the welfare and well being of the cabin staff and flight crew, I have never known them to be anything but friendly and courteous, yes the bugle is annoying but I can live with it. We should be celebrating the success story rather than doing the atypical begrudging Irish thing. Treat every flight like a bus journey, stick to the rules and you can’t go wrong.

Dont understand people complaining for example the boarding pass reprint fee.. its clearly in t&c that you need to print it yourself, you receive notifications via email before departure etc.. Also in the boarding pass it clearly states that only one handbaggage etc, but still i see every time i fly people with 2-3 handbags, and then they are getting angry to the staff when they need to pay extra or do other arrangements.. This is ofcourse not any excuse for rude staff and if they overcharge you without measuring the handbaggage etc. I have used Ryanair many many years, and havent had any trouble with them (so far, knock knock). In the upcoming days im flying to Stockholm Skavsta, return flights for 60 eur + the busstransfer (1hr 20min) to Stockholm City around 20 eur return. No other airline can beat that..

An airline won’t make any profit if people don’t fly and people don’t fly if planes crash. I doubt safely and maintenance wouldn’t be one of his main priorities.
