Minister for Justice Alan Shatter. Leon Farrell/Photocall Ireland

Shatter to face questions in Dáil over Wallace row

The minister will make a statement this evening and will then open himself up to questions from the opposition.

JUSTICE MINISTER ALAN Shatter is due to face questions from the opposition benches this evening about his ongoing row with Independent TD Mick Wallace over penalty points.

Last Thursday, on RTÉ’s Prime Time, Shatter said he was told at a briefing that Wallace benefited from garda discretion after he was found driving while using his mobile phone.

The minister has since come up against harsh criticism from opposition TDs, including calls for him to step down. Though Wallace admitted that the incident did occur, he has lodged a formal complaint with the Data Protection Commissioner to investigate Shatter’s public disclosure of the information.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice told TheJournal.ie that the minister will today make a statement in the Dáil at about 6pm on the issue of “fixed charge offences and garda discretion”. He will then open himself up to questions from the opposition benches.

You can watch proceedings live here.

The hashtag is London, which is visible on all apps and desktop in the same way the headline is.

It is the main hashtag, which appears beside the headline in both the apps and desktop. Thanks!

I’ve never noticed hash tags until now and tag is not shown when you look at list of news stories, London should have been in headline as I too presumed nightclub was in Ireland.

Lads if you “don’t care”, don’t click the bloody article and proceed to read it, then comment on it to have a moan.

Some of us have an interest in the world outside of Ireland.

I looked at the headline and assumed it couldn’t be Ireland, but seeing as this is an Irish news portal I just clicked in to be 100% sure. Regardless of hashtags, which I for one don’t look at, it is a completely misleading headline but that’s normal enough for this site. A custom we should be all used to, in fairness!

    Happy Christmas anyway!

    Hi Lucie,

In fact, it did. Was reported by all the British press, including BBC, Sky etc. And the London Evening Standard. Christmas Day shootings will generally make the news, even if shootings are quite common the rest of the year. Sad state of affairs though that it wouldn’t be news :(
