Junk food TV ad ban to begin in September, but cheese is excluded

A consultation process has resulted in lobbying from the industry to ensure that cheese advertising is not banned.

THE BROADCASTING AUTHORITY of Ireland (BAI) has confirmed that the advertising of foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar will be banned from children’s programming from September.

Michael O’Keefe, chief executive of the BAI, told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that the new rules will also mean that outside of children’s programming, there will be restrictions on the number of junk food ads after 6pm to not more than 25 per cent of the time.

However controversially cheese will not be included in the ban following a lobbying campaign by the industry. The food type had been included in the original draft code released by the BAI prior to a consultation process.

“We will allow cheese advertising but there will have to be an on-screen message,” O’Keefe told Morning Ireland, adding that health groups had looked for the authority to go a lot further in the code.

He insisted that the BAI had not “buckled” under pressure from lobby groups and pointed out that there are health benefits to cheese.

O’Keefe said that the authority would be working with broadcasters and advertisers in the coming months ahead of the full implementation of the new rules on 2 September.

And while they were busy slapping each other on the back ,this is what happened .The sooner the better Zappone and her do gooders clique remember these youths are criminals and will inhabit our prisons in the future , then we might have a better chance of tackling crime.

How many well off, especially the private educated FG supporters have a future in prison? FG have no problem spending fortune keeping people on jail but won’t spend a tiny fraction of that to house the poor leading to homeless future and despair leading to crimes that we all suffer from with a huge hyped up crime fear driven by the media business selling papers and fear especially that owned by a certain FG loving billionaire who’s tribunal findings against him have not been acted on since Enda became Taoiseach in 2011

Can’t believe the Journal has not covered the ST John of God Audit as covered in today’s Irish Mail on Sunday. € 6 million and the CEO got over €2 million. Be true to your values. It is NEWS and much bigger than Console last year

@PVD: I know, I work for this organisation and it infuriates me. The children and ordinary staff members have suffered so much from the cutbacks meanwhile the fat cats get fatter

Didn’t the Journal publish an article earlier in the week saying everything was fine in Oberstown.

Since then there has been at least two articles saying different.
