Many emigrants fled Ireland because they were the victims of sexual abuse

Physical and sexual abuse and parents with alcohol or drug problems were listed as some of the main reasons why people left Ireland in the past.

ECONOMIC PROBLEMS WERE not the only reasons why Irish people decided to up and leave the country in the past.

Physical and sexual abuse and parents with alcohol or drug problems were listed as some of the main reasons why Irish people emigrated.

The findings are from a recent ESRI report that looked into the causes and consequences of migration through the experience of Ireland’s older people.

Data from over 8,000 people aged 50 and over and who had returned to live in Ireland was collected between late 2009 and early 2011.

Abused as children

The survey found that 16 per cent of men who lived outside of Ireland for up to 10 years had experienced physical or sexual abuse as children. For men who had stayed in Ireland, the corresponding figure was just under 10 per cent.

While 13 per cent of men who lived outside of Ireland for between six months and 10 years indicated that their parents had alcohol or drug problems, when compared to 7.5 per cent of stayers.

A similar pattern is seen for women who were categorised as short-term migrants – 13 per cent had experienced physical and/or sexual abuse when compared to eight per cent of women who decided to stay in Ireland.

Alcohol abuse

Both categories of men indicated they had experienced stress in their lives, with the return migrants more likely to have suffered from alcohol problems.

This was also found to be the case for female migrants who had lived outside of Ireland for less than 10 years. However, women who had lived outside of Ireland for 10 years moved to employment and to live economically independent, which they could not do in Ireland.

Social isolation

The findings of the report also indicates that social isolation is a feature of the lives of Ireland’s return migrants.

Between 45 per cent to 62 per cent of men (depending on the length of time back in Ireland) were said to be socially isolated. This compared to just over 30 per cent of those who have never left.

For women who stayed, a third are modestly or mostly isolated, which compares to between 39 and 46 per cent of return migrants.

Garry / James you ask why it would be any business of Les to enquire as to Andrews qualifications to take this job. I guess seeing as Les may be a tax payer he is entitled to ask that seeing as Ireland does provide funding to the charity involved?

I don’t like these big Charities and their big spending and their big Government receipts and their big salaries but they do have an Independent Board who dealt very …….well…..with the current ……vacancy and I think that these people are not subject to your whims and needs. I am sure that all candidates for the position had a fair hearing if they were short listed and they all knew the approximate salary levels for the job which will be published at year end like the previous incumbent’s .

    They are a lovely family

FORMER TD Chris Andrews submitted his resignation from Fianna Fail after being told he was under investigation by his party for anonymously criticising constituency rivals on the internet.
Mr Andrews has admitted using a Twitter account in the name of “brianformerff” to criticise Dublin South East constituency rival Councillor Jim O’Callaghan — the brother of ‘Prime Time’ presenter Miriam O’Callaghan — and Sarah Ryan, the daughter of former Fianna Fail MEP Eoin Ryan.
He had also used the fake account to criticise “dynasties” in Fianna Fail, even though he himself is a grandson of former minister Todd Andrews, a son of former TD Niall Andrews and a cousin of former junior minister Barry Andrews — all part of the Fianna Fail family.
A party source said that Mr Andrews was contacted two weeks ago after the party got a complaint that he was making potentially defamatory remarks about party members. “The process had started and Chris was given the opportunity to respond to it,” the source said.
Fianna Fail had been given a 35-page dossier about the fake Twitter account containing computer records and photographs of Mr Andrews. It was supplied by the husband of one of the women criticised in it.
Fianna Fail did not receive any response from Mr Andrews to its disciplinary investigation — and the first it heard of his resignation was when he announced it in the ‘Sunday Independent’ yesterday.
Mr Andrews was elected as a TD for Dublin South East in 2007 but lost his seat last year. He had been appointed by leader Micheal Martin as a local area representative in Dublin, and the party was expecting him to run in the 2014 local elections and, possibly after that, for the Dail.
    Regret

He will now be unable to face any disciplinary action from Fianna Fail because he is no longer a member.
He could not be contacted last night but he had earlier told the ‘Sunday Independent’ that he was responsible for the fake Twitter account.
“It was the wrong thing to do. I regret doing it. For someone who is generally outspoken and not afraid to speak out, I regret that I did not say things publicly six months ago,” he said.
His fake tweets included one criticising the election of former Fianna Fail councillor Sarah Ryan — whose twitter account is ‘SarahCatRyan’ — to the party’s national executive.
“FF say they want change from past but they still elect to continue dynasties like @SarahCatRyan to internal positions in party!!”, it read.
Another called for RTE to question Mr O’Callaghan for his legitimate work as a barrister representing former Fianna Fail chief fundraiser Des Richardson at the Mahon Tribunal.
Mr O’Callaghan said last night that he did not wish to comment. Ms Ryan could not be contacted for comment.
Mr Andrews’s use of the fake account was uncovered by an extraordinary tracking operation mounted by the husband of one of the women being criticised anonymously by him.
It involved setting up a fake Twitter account called “john_cant_type”, posting messages with links to articles to the “brianformerff” account used by Mr Andrews, and hoping he would click on the links to identify the computer he was using. Once he did, he was traced to the Amazon internet cafe in Rathmines, Dublin.
According to the ‘Sunday Independent’, the man investigating Mr Andrews took covert photographs and video recordings of him visiting the cafe at times when the tweets were sent from the “brianformerff” account.
Both the fake “brianformerff” and the “john_cant_type” Twitter accounts have been shut down.

Arrogant and smug as a TD.

Why did the article mention his family ties to broadcaster Ryan Turbidy and not to his brother Dave Mcsavage who is also employed by Rte.

Either way in my opinion its another case of jobs for the boys and Goal will not see another cent from me.

What grim man – he’d scare the bejesus out of ya by his mere look. Obviously GOAL couldn’t find anyone better than a former FF politican. I won’t be supporting them again – dont want a single cent of mine going to the pocket of Andrews.

The amount of bile from some people on these types of forums is terribly sad.

The man has a new job. GOAL have selected Mr Andrews as their new CEO. He’s well liked, well connected, intelligent and articulate. This is exactly the sort of person GOAL needs to steady the ship and develop from here. I think it’s a wise move from them.

GOAL is an independently run organisation – not an arm of the state. The idea that because we give a few quid to an organisation gives us significant rights over that organisation is ludicrous. This logic suggests that anyone dropping coins in a charity workers bucket can tell them what to do or how to do it – which is obviously nonsense.

Good luck Mr Andrews – it sounds like you are going to need it.

David Andrews chaired the Irish Red Cross, a tainted organisation for years, hushing up wrongdoing.

    Will Barry be any different?
