Here are the things we learned, loved and shared today.

HERE ARE THE things we learned, loved and shared today as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#DROWNED A man in his 30s has died after going swimming in a lake in Co Galway. The Lithuanian man went swimming in Ballyquirke Lake in Moycullen, Co Galway, but got into difficulty. He was taken from the water at 6.40pm and pronounced dead after 9pm last night. A post-mortem is due to be carried out.

#NEWSPAPERS Creditors are to vote on a rescue package for the Sunday Business Post next week. The paper said that seven different classes of creditors will be asked to vote on the scheme, which will include Key Capital and newspaper executive Paul Cooke taking control of the paper following investment of €750,000. A six per cent pay cut would be levied across the board under the package.

#TURKEY The Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has warned his patience ‘has a limit’, as protests entered their tenth day. Thousands of protestors have massed in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmire. Erdogan has staged his own rallies, hitting three cities in one day. He told crowds that “nobody should worry” and that Turkey “went through many events in the past and will overcome this too”.

#CHILDREN A child left a creche on its own and walked towards its home in Dublin, it has emerged. The incident happened when the child left a childcare centre on the Balgaddy Road. Gardaí were contacted and the boy was located a short time later. He was uninjured.

#MANDELA Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa, is still in hospital being treated for a lung condition. South Africa is waiting for news on his health, with local papers saying it is time to let Madiba, as he is known, “go”. Mandela is due to turn 95 next month.

#RIP The author Iain Banks has died, just two months after he announced he was battling terminal cancer. The Scottish author of books including the Wasp Factory was just 59 years of age. He had advanced gall-bladder cancer.

THINGS WE LOVED

THINGS WE SHARED

  • Writer Jonathan Safran Foer looks at loneliness, and the impact that technology has on it. “The more distracted we become, and the more emphasis we place on speed at the expense of depth, the less likely and able we are to care,” he warns in the New York Times.
  • The devastating tornado that wrecked havoc on Moore, Oklahoma, killed two dozen people and destroyed thousands of homes. This satellite photograph shows the trail of destruction.
  • Simon Cowell has as many detractors as fans… and one woman decided to show him her feelings on last night’s Britain’s Got Talent final by egging him:

“However, if you’re reporting an ex or just have some grudge over a personal issue, maybe try skipping straight to Jeremy Kyle and leave us out of your sad nonsense” he continued.

Should be shelter killers? Rapists? Child abusers? We are the police. This is OUR society. We should reject and convict those who commit crimes.
