I can’t see a vunerable young person getting beaten up by the gardai so I’d say it lies or else it a little pup that got a kick in the arse. It never did me any harm. We have more serious things to be worrying about in the news.

More luggs brannigan type policing in areas where the little s**ts have zero respect for anyone. There is a serious problem with people bringing(or lack of) up children by letting them loose on the streets as soon as they can walk….argh also, journal..will you please sort out the iPhone app..as soon as a comment reaches 6 lines you can’t read what you are writing…it’s soooo annoying!!!!

Pointless uninformative article. They are little thugs in this place. The guards are not going around slapping them for no reason. They cost the state a fortune, appreciate nothing, then run away to commit crime before being picked up again by guards. Bit of a generalisation but its my opinion

Can you say a child that has never been shown consistency or taught how to deal positively with fear or frustration is simply a thug? Many of these children have spent there young lives being abused, betrayed and backed into a corner. I’m not sure how my teenage years would have gone had that of been my experience.

Can’t believe it took a government body, time, money and resources to discover that children, if they do something bold, don’t like being sent to their room!!!! As per last paragraph. I think their efforts could be better spent doing almost anything else then listening to brats like those homes in oberstown.

Good man, Mark. This topic has already had more than its fair share of trolling. Why don’t you try the Chris De Burgh article. You might actually succeed in offending people over there.

By comparison to countries of similar size (though with better economic positions than us) they are overpaid. Especially from Sargeant up. Those countries would have more crime than us as well.

To Author; why is this article titled with ‘Garda Abuse’ when most of the article is actually about the running of Oberstown which Gardai have no participation in. Are ye that stuck that you must sensationalise a story of nothing.

If they are implying independence from An Garda Siochana, wouldn’t it ideally read The Ombudsman for An Garda Siochana? Which would be subjective instead of the the possessive Garda Ombudsman. At least in the UK they have their PR down.

After all the scandal of the abuse at Industrial Schools and the Magdalene laundries (and rightly so) the comments here mainly seem to condone Garda abuse of children. The hypocrisy amazes and saddens me. Oberstown houses children under the age of 18 and any violence against children is child abuse. Gardai, like the priests and nuns and ‘care staff’, in the older institutions mentioned are in a position of power and this should never be abused, especially against children, no matter whether they have committed crimes or not.

Sadly, gardai don’t fear the Garda Ombudsman at all. They rarely get more than a rap over the knuckles. The Ombudsman’s Office needs to get itself into gear because there are some shocking gardai about that go around giving the brilliant majority of gardai out there a bad name without getting the punishment that they deserve.
