Car and Luas collide at busy Dublin junction

There have been no reports of injuries but gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the area.

A CAR AND a Luas have collided at a busy junction in Dublin’s city centre this morning.

The collision occurred at about 10am at the junction of Benburb Street and Queen Street, close to the quays.

Gardaí, paramedics and the fire service are currently at the scene but there are no reports of injuries.

It is understood that the Luas was blocking Benburb Street for a period and gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the area, with diversions in place. On Twitter the Luas is reporting delays on the Red Line but said that the line is now fully reopened.

I don’t think it’s the Luas that’s the problem, people are always trying to dash through the lights there.

Matthew, tram systems work very well all over the world but things do sometimes go wrong and human error is an ever-present potential in any system. Installing an underground system would have been prohibitively expensive in the initial phase and, probably, financially un-doable in any expansion phases, given the current situation.
On balance I would say it’s a good system but there’s no legislating for muppets in cars etc……..pre-supposing that’s where the fault lay in this incident………or, indeed, muppets driving trams, (but I have more confidence in LUAS drivers than I do in most car drivers).

They are going to have to put barriers in at this particular junction. It seems every couple of months theres a crash at this exact spot even despite there being a dedicated traffic camera pointed at the junction. Someone is going to die unless the authorities do something.

There is something wrong with this junction. Its probably an intermittent problem in timing on the traffic lights. This junction just has to many accidents with the luas.

Green B, ah, but that’s after the event and is penalty not prevention.
Presumably any damage caused to a LUAS tram by another vehicle would be paid for by the other vehicle’s insurance and not out of the public purse. Also a penalty but one that would probably imbue a sense of caution for the future.
LUAS damaging another vehicle should be paid for by the LUAS system, of course.
Sorry, got into “educating parent’s mother to evacuate eggs by vacuum” mode there.

Green. Help prevent red light jumpers by increasing penalty points, and if it causes crash, depending on the severity a minimum of a 3 month ban.

Martin, Something of a human trait, it seems. In Manchester city centre there are specific bus only areas which are well publicised and very well signed. Two large hydraulic rams stick up out of the roadway, (it’s single track/high kerbs at that point, so no sneaking around ‘em). When a bus approaches an on-board sensor “talks” to the ram controls and down they go. Bus proceeds and rams rise, once more, when system senses bus is clear, (some of my minor details might be out but you get the idea). This does not stop the odd bright spark in a car trying to sneak in after the bus. There’s at least one vide – probably Youtube – of this happening and the car being more than slightly damaged…………….beyond repair. Doubtless the lucky driver gets to pay a hefty fine as well. Prevention is very difficult; those from the shallow end of the gene pool will always find a way, or attempt to. Fitted at LUAS junctions these rams could become a tourist attraction. ☺☠
