Kerry county councillors 'to contact Justice Minister over knife crime'

A local councillor said that it is “about time the Minister of Justice tackled this issue”.

KERRY COUNTY COUNCILLORS are to make representations to the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, about knife crime.

Local county councillor Michael Cahill told TheJournal.ie that he believes knife crime “seems to be on the increase big time in Ireland” and that it is “about time the Minister of Justice tackled this issue”.

Cllr Cahill said that “every single day” there seems to be stabbings and murders, and that there is an “obvious need” to address the issue.

He said he and his council colleagues will be making representations in that context to the Minister for Justice.

He added that it is “only when it comes close to your own door that you realise the consequences of all this”.

He said that this was an issue he had discussed with his peers in the past.

The bodies of a woman and her daughter were found in a Killorglin house yesterday evening. It is believed they are a mother and daughter who met violent deaths.

Gardaí have not yet officially released the cause of their deaths.

The words ‘justice’ and ‘shatter’ are incompatible.

I’m sure their solution just involves allowing people to drink drive. For Kerry County Councillors read Publican Lobby.

I lived in the north of Canada where we all wore knives on our belts for hunting etc. it was common everywhere. In 10 years there was not one single stabbing – Violence sure, but nobody used their knives or guns on other people. Self control is in the culture.

Sure wont the local councillors come up with a reason why the knives are needed like in case they get mugged on their way home from the pub.
