Nelson Mandela's condition 'has become critical' in the past 24 hours

President Jacob Zuma has issued a statement this evening.

THE CONDITION OF the former South African president Nelson Mandela has become ‘critical’ in the last 24 hours, according to a statement from the office of the president this evening.

“The condition of former President Nelson Mandela, who is still in hospital in Pretoria, has become critical,” a statement said this evening with current President Jacob Zuma along with African National Congress deputy president Ramaphosa, visiting Mandela in hospital this evening

They were briefed by the medical team in the hospital in Pretoria who informed them that Madiba’s condition has become critical over the past 24 hours. The pair also met with Mandela’s current wife Graca Machel.

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,” said President Zuma.

Zuma also insisted that reports of Mandela having suffered a cardiac arrest after his ambulance broke down on his way to hospital earlier this month were without any truth.

“There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care. The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses.

“The doctors also dismissed the media reports that Madiba suffered cardiac arrest. There is no truth at all in that report,” Zuma said.

He called on South Africans to pray for Mandela, the family and the medical team that is attending to him.

No one said he was an angel, but he stood up for his people, to free them, to give them a better way of life.

In the process, people were killed, no one denies that, but every revolution has blood on its hands, it’s unavoidable.

In this case, Mandela did it for the people, and no one else.

It’s a shame SA has regressed in the years since he stood down, but his legacy will live forever, I just hope that his eventual passing, inspires a nation, one again to improve their country, and seek a peaceful way forward.

If anyone doubts Mandela’s greatness then they should just look at what happened in Zimbabwe after independence. South Africa under Mandela refused to take ‘revenge’ on the white population and embraced them. It is now the most prosperous and democratic country on the continent. Zimbabwe is just the opposite because of Mugabe.

Orla obviously doesn’t have a clue about this subject and is just another sheep believing all she is fed. The man is a tyrant who oversaw the transformation of his country from a safe economic powerhouse under the racist Apartheid regime to a crime ridden basket case. Yes Orla, he changed history, but so did Hitler. Maybe you should save some of your misspent worship for real heroes.

Safe economic powerhouse? Nobody would do business with them because of apartheid. It only looked like an affluent society because only a minority had access to its wealth. You need to look deeper to understand a society. The proliferation of shanty towns along the SA borders is not because of poverty but because people from other countries flock there as it offers stability and opportunity. As for Mandela being a tyrant. That is just stupid. His position for a long time was only ceremonial and he provided a figurehead for equality. He never actually participated in legislating or in the running of the economy. People need to get their facts right and stop slandering a man who should be idolised.

South Africa the most prosperous and democratic country on the continent? That is manifestly false. As recently as April this year the South African government had brought in media laws that Freedom House called “indicative of an increasingly worrying trajectory on press freedom” in the country. A quarter of the population live in abject poverty. I’m not questioning Mandela himself, but the ANC are not a particularly positive force for South Africa. It was the ordinary people of South Africa who stood up to the oppression of the apartheid state. In many ways the ANC betrayed Mandela’s vision.

After Decolonisation many countries in Africa became dictatorships with people ruling according to tribal allegiances. Those who weren’t of the ruling tribe were barred from everything. This included voting, working, owning property, etc. Millions died through fighting and starvation and continue to do so. Companies won’t invest in them and the majority of revenue is sent out of these countries to rest in accounts belonging to a few corrupt rulers. South Africa mightn’t be a Utopia but it has the ability to change and progress. This in part is because of the leadership Mandela provided after black independence. The country could have been torn apart by civil war but Mandela made sure that didn’t happen by giving everybody a say in the countries running. Nobody could have done a better job and his critics are few, but you can’t please everybody.
