Photos: Thousands take to the streets for Pride parade

It’s the 30th anniversary of the Dublin Pride parade.

(Photo: Laura Hutton/Photocall Ireland)

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE have taken to the streets today for the annual Pride parade in Dublin city centre.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the parade, and marks the end of a fortnight of events to mark LGBT rights. Organisers say the event is the second largest parade in Ireland, behind the Patrick’s Day event.

The parade began at the Gardens of Remembrance on Parnell Square and wound its way to Merrion Square.

However the parade was disrupted on O’Connell Street shortly after it began this afternoon when a small number of protesters stood in front of a Labour bus which was taking part in the parade and stopped it from going any further. The protest, which is believed to have been an anti-property tax and anti-government protest, lasted around ten minutes.

The Pride events began in Dublin more than a decade after the gay pride movement originally began as a result of the Stonewall riots in New York in 1969. Instead, Ireland saw smaller groups calling for rights for gay people, including the abolition of the controversial Victorian law which criminalised homosexual acts.

The Pride parade has its roots in a protest springing from a 1983 case in which a judge gave five men suspended sentences on manslaughter charges after the brutal murder of 31-year-old Aer Rianta workerDeclan Flynn in a Dublin park.  That year, a march was held from Dublin city centre to Fairview, where the attack took place, to protest against violence against gay men and women. The first Pride parade took place that summer.

The parade has increased in size and scale over the years. The parade Grand Marshal this year was Anna Grodzka, a transgender MP from the Polish parliament.

Proud of Dublin’s support for tolerance today. A far cry from Ireland of generations past.

Yes Dublin/Ireland is more tolerant but there is still a long way to go until gay people have equal rights.

Wouldn’t be a million miles away from that. But think about the nights you have out and manys of couples taking a quickie in a back ally or making out on the streets or on the dance dance floor. That’s also sexual expression. What’s the difference really? Apart from the gay community have a dedicated day? Do you complain about tits in the news paper as much?

But we where born into society and in society things need to be balanced , as for bum bums been flashed, the whole point of pride is to change the minds of narrow minded folk, that been gay is A ok. But folks who are having a hard time with this will have an even harder time with a man in leather with his arse on display. I think pride has lost it’s pride and the message is getting distorted!.

This is great for highlighting a huge discrimination in Irish society: a gay man can proclaim his love of backdoor action via a parade and thousands come out to cheer him on, yet a straight guy like myself mentions the same desire to some random chick in a chat up situation, and I’m called a pervert!

We probably wouldn’t have much of an opinion on it bar “I’d tap that” so why should we have an opinion on the fact a lad does it. In fairness it is a bit alien but if women can do it why can’t men… Equal rights etc.. To achieve that we all have to be on the same page..

You can have a straight pride when you get beat up on the streets for being straight, and you can also have a straight pride when you get discriminated against. Simple. These are people declaring there pride in themselves and showing that their a welcoming community. This is evident in social networking sites as everyone is seemingly welcome. However my thoughts were the same as yours. When I did my research in changed.

You need to educate yourself on the Pride movement. It stems from a period of history where I, and others like me, could have been imprisoned in prison or psychiatric hospitals because of loving someone of the same gender. Pride today is not about telling people that you are gay, it is also a celebration of changing history. Why do we have a St. Patrick’s Day parade? The simple fact is so long as people like you ask that question, Pride is vital.

It was a matter for the police in the past Denise, when they were thrown in jail to rot for the crime of being who they are.
Why do they have to tell everyone they are gay?
Because they can without being beaten, gassed, arrested, murdered, brutalized and discriminated against in virtually every way a society can discriminate:
    They paid higher taxes.
    They were refused lodging.
    They were refused security clearances.
    They were refused employment.
    They were refused education.
They were refused a place in the church.

That’s why, hon. Did I clear that up for ye?

Marriage as an institution was designed so a man and a woman would create a bond, have children and prevent a society dying off, that’s literally what it’s for hence the legal protections. That would be a fair statement wouldn’t it? Nothing offensive against that. Why would gays want to or need to get married? I honestly think there’s a lot of whinge-baggery going on from some small loud elements within the gay community about discrimination and persecution; they’re parading around in ass-less pants in broad daylight and being completely left alone…oh yeah, it’s Nazi Germany all over again. i know gay people who don’t feel the need to rub our noses in it every year and demand marriage for the sake of it. They keep their sex lives / love lives private. Denise took a lot of flak for highlighting a double standard and was verbally crucified to what equates to cyber bullying by people who claim to embrace equality.

Seriously people we can love who ever we want to as long as we are good people it shouldn’t matter. Show everyone the same respect no matter what their sexuality! It has nothing to do with you so why should you give your opinion on anyone else an who they choose to love! It really confuses me how they can be so judgemental!

It’s good to see that Ireland is not all about Pro-life, Catholic Clergy suppressing the reality of clerical child abuse and refusing to atone, and senior public servants and senior politicians, FF and FG, colluding with predatory bankers.

There is another more joyful side to the Irish and only a few anti gay remarks have been posted.

    It’s been a good day.

While there is no need to reduce the conversation to pot shots about appearance, considering your disdain for homosexuals Denise – you do spend a lot of time commenting on articles about them. And in really quite negative tones.
Perhaps a little empathy wouldn’t go too far astray – you would not like to be persecuted for your heterosexuality, so why seek to persecute others because they were made a little differently to you?
Why does other people’s sex lives preoccupy you so much? It seems quite unhealthy.. I try not to think about what other people get up to in their bedrooms because its private.. Why is it the ones with the issues around it are so focused on something that’s none of their business?
