Hewlett Packard is cutting 280 jobs at its Dublin office

The job losses were announced by the computer company this evening.

THE COMPUTER COMPANY Hewlett Packard has announced that it will shed 280 jobs at it offices in south Dublin but will make efforts to redeploy employees affected.

The company is making 220 employees redundant with 60 contractors also being let go following a review by one of its clients of its pan-European operating model.

The client has decided to move services closer to customers in Italy and Portugal meaning that HP’s multilingual support services at its plant in Sandyford will no longer required and will end at the end of March next year.

A spokesperson for the company said that “every effort” would be made to redeploy the staff within HP but did acknowledge that the positions and employees are being made redundant

A statement from the company this evening said: “HP is fully committed to its operations in Ireland and will work closely with its employees on the transition and redeployment opportunities to help minimize any impact and ensure high standards of customer delivery quality are maintained.”

The construction of a recently announced facility in Galway will still go ahead and will lead to the creation of 150 construction jobs, the company maintained this evening.

In May of last year, HP announced plans to cut 27,000 jobs from its global workforce of 350,000 by 2014 in an effort to save $3.5 billion annually.

What’s this got to do with austerity? This is about a company shutting down an operation because the customer of that operation wants the services provided closer to home.

Stop being an idiot and blaming everything on the idiots in government. They’re responsible for a lot, but not this

My guess is that these are all multi-lingual positions, meaning that it won’t effect too many Irish people. Still, not good news, but it could have been worse.

Given the high unemployment in Italy and Portugal it makes no sense to outsource roles to another country. They can get better, and cheaper, staff at home.

Salaries in the private sector are way too high. This has to be a huge factor in the decision to move those jobs. The huge salaries they have to pay probably go along way in cancelling out the low corporation tax.

It will cost far less than 24k in Portugal or Italy. More importantly I bet the facilities and other overheads are lower.

My sympathies are with those who will lose their jobs, but it really infuriates me when people jump on a bandwagon and use every bad news story to bash the government, never letting the true facts get in the way if a good moan. This is nothing to do with corporation tax or austerity. HP still have very significant manufacturing operations in Ireland. If you care to read the article again, you will see that it is about where their customer want the services to be provided. No amount of government policy, good or bad, would have changed that.

Not at all Gary. Just that the only green thumb you got for that last comment appeared immediately after you submitted it. A thought for you though – if everyone in the private sector accepted a salary of 24k, where would the income tax revenue come from to pay for all of government spending? Schools, hospitals, emergency services, salaries for all those employed in public service?

Firstly I’d imagine there are more people on the journal this evening at the same time as me looking at and commenting on articles. Secondly, so pay the private sector huge money but keep cutting the public sectors salaries? The “I pay your wages” works both ways. If I didn’t buy goods and services you wouldn’t get paid either.

Where did I mention cutting public sector salaries? I don’t agree with that – everyone should be able to earn an equivalent salary, public or private sector. We need an export led economy to bring income into thus country. That means we need a strong private sector, where workers in that sector are earning money to circulate in the domestic economy.

In relation to these jobs Gary that might not be correct but overall you have a point. You keep cutting and people have less money to spend on private sector goods and services. Its bound to have a knock on effect in job cuts. Which is why it is the governments fault.
