16 rescued from apartment block blaze, one woman goes into labour

It has been reported that the fire was started maliciously in a hallway of one of the apartment blocks.

Updated 10.58am

DUBLIN FIRE BRIGADE rescued 16 people – 13 adults and three children – from their homes overnight after a fire broke out in an apartment block in Clondalkin.

A spokesperson for the Dublin Fire Brigade told TheJournal.ie that six of their units headed to the Thornfield Square Apartments, Watery Lane after they received a call just after 5.30am.

The fire-fighters managed to get most people out of the building, however, some children had to be rescued through windows and another was helped from the roof.

Three ambulance services were also at the scene and they treated around six residents for smoke inhalation. No one was seriously injured.

Onlookers told TheJournal.ie that a pregnant woman went into labo10ur and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

RTÉ News are reporting that local gardaí say the fire was start maliciously in a hallway of one of the apartment blocks.

The DFB spokesperson also said that most of the damage was caused to the hallway and landing. “The apartments are generally smoke damaged”, the spokesperson said.

Most of the FG old guard and their advisors should go, we’ve seen how bad and grossly incompetent they’ve been doring the election campaign and it makes you wonder what eff ups have they made that the public don’t know about. We’ve had symptoms of some very bad mistakes when Noonan was against Greece getting a better deal than Ireland with their EU bailouts, which could be costing Ireland billions and lots of unnecessary austerity.

Up to FF and SF to step up to the plate now. Together they have at least 67 seats.

Only need to find 12 more from (realistically) the SD/Green/Independents. That is 12 to find out of 28 potential partners – before you even consider AAA/Lab.

Question is – have they the guts to follow this through?

Shinners , no thank you . their position on the Special Criminal Court makes them a danger to the state . Ireland is small country where criminals have a large reach , id we didnt have the SCC some of Ireland worst thugs and animals that are behinds bars would be still terrorising their communities. Of course this policy of abolishing the SCC is very popular with the criminal gangs within these neighborhoods

They absolutely destroyed lives, people died as a consequence of late diagnosis and treatments.Suicide rates went through the roof on their watch These and many other issues is why the coalition fell And I for one am glad they got they got a punch in the nose

I’m no FG supporter but it annoys me to see random statements thrown around.
People have been dying for generations as a result of late diagnoses and suicide rates are through the roof these past 5 years? Really? I’d like the numbers to see the facts and not just diatribe as that gets us nowhere.

In my humble view the coalition fell for a few reasons – the collapse of Labour in the ‘working class’ voting areas and FF core voters returning to FF after seeing no real difference with FG.

Another thing we need to wake up to is FG are still the biggest party so it’s going to be a FG taoiseach one way or another. FF are just out for themselves and fear SF in opposition big time so their cynical call for reform is just that cynical, where was the call for reform in the last 20 years mehole?

I’m sure they can but I always think when that happens that it’s misleading the people who voted for you. Like it or not some of the people who voted for FG TD’s probably did so because they were running for FG. While I can’t wait to see the back of the sneering TD from Castlebar I’m not sure that’s the way to go. I’m also not a fan of FF or SF but I do like the sound of some of the Dail reforms that Martin is talking about

An Béal Bocht is right about FF being cynical. On what principle are they refusing to even countenance coalition? None. They just don’t want to be the junior partner. Remember they wanted us all paying €500 per year for water.

For once I agree with the Shinners – we need a stable government and FG/FF is the only viable option this time. But FF are putting the party before the country, what a surprise.

It looks like these two will be The Big Two for a while yet. In a choice between FF and FG (under Varadkar or Richard Bruton, Kenny already ruled himself out) I hope FG wipe the floor with them.

Any TD can vote for or against any nominee for Taoiseach, the party whips are an internal matter only. But since the 1930s, I don’t believe there’s been a single crossover between FF and FG.

Incidentally, of the fair few who left FG or Labour in the last term, I believe only Shortall and Broughan made it back again.

The prob tho Jane is lets say for instance theres a debate on something to do with Nama and the left are brought into discuss it. FG can hide things and frame the discussion a certain way, if something then comes up later FG/FF can abrogate responsibility by saying oh sure everyone had an input to this. Similar to the property bubble FF tried arguing that sure everyone was egging them on to do more, but there was some dissension who were told to find a dark room and bring a pistol. At the end of the day if you have the most seats you have the most influence, that’s the inherent problem if you like with representational democracy, minorities lose out

I’d say Dail reform was a hot topic on the doorsteps only the reform most ppl would have been talking about is, reducing the number of TD”s for example why do we need 158 of them for such a small population also I’d hazard a guess that a lot of people were asking about their wages and pensions. But with the choice that the electorate made – split parliament then the reforms talked about such as and end to rushing through legislation (unless extraordinary circumstances) limits on the ability of the government to control all business of the house and an end to ‘guillotine’ are appropriate.

Watched the oscars the other night and was struck by the guy who spoke for Spotlight. In his speech he said that it was the free press who have to hold the powerful accountable. Given Independent News and Media are owned by DOB. RTE were a disgrace during the general election, staying away from govt bad news stories and throwing dirt on the non Govt parties. Examples of this would be holding back of the european report which was critical of the govt, also known in advance that the modular homes were never going to be built but the news kept quiet until after the election.
Sean O’Rouke was a disgrace in his interview with Adams while giving Kenny a very easy ride. Then to interview Bertie Ahern a week later and treat him like a hero FFS. What we need is genuine independent news and media but anyone know where I could get that. Don’t say an poblacht just want genuine news that tell the story and hold big business to account.

I use twitter really, can’t remember the last time I bought a newspaper or watched a whole news program on TV but by following lots of different people with opposing views on many topics you can get the news you are looking for. Also on many articles online, I read comments sections a lot, you may have to learn to read between the lines though. But you definitely have to find your own news, analyse it and make up your own mind about what’s truth, what are outright lies & what’s just spin.

I’d abolish the dole as it stands, instead people will work for what they get, those that secure 35+ hours work will get a medical card, those with 20-35hrs a week will get a GP card (they’re paying for it through taxes anyway and which demographic do I want to live longer anyway?), salary caps across all sectors, €30k-€50k being the average range, €100k-€150k being the top range, I’d also do my best to get everyone into accommodation (lots of ghost estates around the country still), I’d reform the current education system to include getting your drivers licence, learn how to swim, first aid and CPR/AED use, basic firefighting skills, cooking, ironing, washing and computer programming skills being introduced as well as work placement stints and early credit system for college courses and whatever I can do with that health system will be a priority. I might not be popular with some but I’d put Ireland back on track again. ;-)

Lab hammered the people the party was founded to defend. They can no longer speak on their behalf, so what’s the point of having this lab party, they have no credibility.

Joespha Madigan seems like a far better prospect than Shatter. She’s very direct and isn’t afraid of having an unpopular opinion. I don’t think it was a fluke.

On a point of order, can I just ask why EVERY utterance from a TD, Senator, Minister, Cabinet member, quasi government flunky, is always prefaced by “a warning”? They are warning us morning, noon and night. Why can nobody just supply a piece of information or a recommendation – why must it alwayst be couched in the terms of dire warnings or prophecies of doom? Could it be to add weight to some inconsequential statement, perhaps?

Sour grapes and shattered ego from a man who got sacked/resigned as Minister for Justice. The list of derogatory stories associated with this midget parasite is endless and he makes the decision to put up election posters with the slogan “Truth,Honesty,Integrity”. Listen Shatter, a bit of truth, honesty and integrity would be welcome in this country but it will not be coming from Kenny, or Fitzgerald, or Coveney, or Barrett, or Donohue, or Harris, or Noonan and especially not from you. Get lost.

I don’t think it was FG’s campaign that lost them seats. It was their actions in government; especially in the first couple of years; medical cards, Irish water etc., plus people seem to have a very short memory of the state FF left the country in and were too quick to vote for them again.

Horrible little man. Constantly refuses to condemn the murder of children by trigger happy IDF soldiers. When I hear this fella speak all I can think of are those four little boys playing football on the beach and having to run, terrified, for their lives.

Reports from “sources” in Labour HQ is that it was Labour who kept Shatter in situ as long as he was. By all accounts he was more Labour than the Labour ministers.
Which means that either he was in the wrong party or how far right are Labour senior members, when FG Justice minister is leaning more to the left that they were

Sour grapes of the highest order. One of the major problems with FG as a party is that they always seem to be at each others throats. Such a bunch of backstabbers and mé féiners
