Police knocked unconscious by rioters 'wielding swords and missiles' in Belfast

OVER 30 POLICE officers and an MP in Northern Ireland have been injured in six hours of rioting in Belfast overnight.

The riots kicked off when police stopped an Orange Order march for the traditional Twelfth of July commemorations from passing through the nationalist area of Ardoyne.

Police said that officers in North Belfast were attacked by individuals "wielding swords and missiles, including heavy masonry, golf balls, bottles and fireworks". Four officers were taken to hospital for treatment to injuries in this area, three having been knocked unconscious. Another officer sustained head and leg injuries.

Police also confirmed that a missile thrown at police lines in North Belfast struck DUP MP Nigel Dodds, who is also understood to have been knocked unconscious.

In East Belfast, a total of 12 officers were injured after being attacked and targeted with missiles and petrol bombs. A Mutial Aid officer sustained a broken leg while a PSNI officer has a suspected broken jaw. Water cannons were deployed to try to push back the rioters.

Six people were arrested in the area for offences ranging from disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest to assault. A 39-year-old male was also arrested for "doing a provocative act".

A video, released by the police cervice, shows the kind of violence officers were faced with:

(Video: Police ServiceNI/YouTube)

Today Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore condemned the violence and "disrespect for the rule of law" which he said was an affront to the decent people of the city.

"We are at one in our commitment and determination to uphold the law and support the police," he said. "Our thoughts in particular are with those who were injured upholding the peace."

#Sean. Not at all, but I would like some consistency. This is typical Irish backwards politics. Obviously there is a clear need to change our dependencies on fossil fuels but before we start to ban the use of these across the whole country, a viable, and consumer friendly alternative, should be put in place. What will the alternative be if this kind of policy does become law? Oh yes…we’ll all have to buy back the gas Shell are illegally extracting (well maybe not illegally, but cheaply at least) off the coast of Mayo! Or maybe we’ll go and buy it off Gazprom! Why isn’t Hogan progressing with the wind and wave energy that has been proven to generate ample supplies of enviro-friendly energy off the west coast? Its easy to put a ban in place, and alas its a clear reflection of the lazy have arsed approach that this idiot has used throughout the life of this spineless government.

I have an open fire which I rarely if ever use. I have just replaced my old oil boiler with a 97% fuel efficient condensing Grant boiler costing 1200 Euro which took me some time to save for. Over the past 4 years I have zoned my house and placed TRV valves on each rad to have total control of the heat flow and cost of my heating which has saved me a huge amount of money and will easily cover the cost of installation after a couple of years. I have changed all the zone thermostats to digital. While at home I use a oil electric rad to heat the room I am in while wearing thick hiking socks or my superman ones I got for Christmas. If this article was about a study by An independent study group the vast majority would be backing it. It’s common sense not to use coal turf. Just to clarify, I do think Hogan is a tool and I am in no way backing him as a politician

id rather be burning turf/wood than relying on oil and extricity to fully heat our home. it is zoned and we only use heat where we need it. upstairs requires very little heat as hot water pipes are running under the floors and its like underfloor heating up there. we never have to switch on immersion as we’ve constant supply of hot water. we cut our own turf and raise it ourselves. it works for us, we’re warm and comfortable and spend very little money doing it.

    Sean
Since you asked the question without trying to understand let me advise and then you won’t make the same mistake again! Smokey coal produces a substance referred to as particulate matter which was a massive pollutant in Dublin thirty years ago and every winter was a contributory factor in hundreds of deaths. In fact on some days it appeared as if the City was on fire there was so much smog in the air. After the ban was introduced by Mary Harney the improvement in air quality was immediate and spectacular. The Minister is quite right in what he proposes and I would go further by saying he has an obligation to ban smokey coal.

How much carbon wouldn’t be belched into the atmosphere if that fat fook didnt hop a flight to every conference, meeting or chat. Wont even mention the 5 star hotels or fine eateries the pr1ck charges back to the state. A vile rancid man.

350 deaths. … If the government are serious about saving money in the health service, and about preserving the nations health, … Ban cigarettes. Were talking thousands of premature deaths, and 10s of thousands of hospital visits per year. Yes it will take 20 or 30 years to reap the benefits, but it would be worth it.
Probably something to do with revenue perhaps ?… You’ll probably find that the tax take on smokeless fuel is more than on smokey fuel.
