Man dies in early-morning Louth crash

The victim was in his 20s.

GARDAÍ IN LOUTH are investigating the circumstances of a single-car collision in Ardee.

The vehicle was discovered on Bog Road in Townspark at about 7am this morning. Investigators are unsure when the incident occurred as it could have been any time between last night and the early hours of this morning.

The driver – a man in his 20s and the sole occupant of the car – was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The road is currently closed for forensic and technical examinations. Gardaí have issued an appeal to anyone who travelled the Bog Road during the night to contact the local station on 041 685 3222.

It is the second road death this weekend, following the tragic news from Cork yesterday that a four-year-old girl was killed in a single-vehicle collision.

RIP: Glee star Cory Monteith found dead in Vancouver hotel room

    “that’s good news for everyone”

An investment in public transport that would make cars no longer a necessary purchase, that would be good news for everyone. Cars for everybody is only good news for car dealers and manufacturers.

Not really, as if you drive a 00 or 01 reg, or a car that is too old to insure, then its very unlikely that you are going to splash out on a 161 reg. If anything, the fact that new car sales are increasing means that there will be more supply of second hand cars for people that drive old cards, that can’t be insured.

I ran my 14 year old car through the NCT only this morning. 80k on the clock so there’s many more years left in it. Bought for and paid for in cash without ever having to borrow a cent for it or ever get into debt for it in any way. That’s how I always buy vehicles. fools and their money.

On the other hand, I did buy a pretty nice trailer tent too last week for close to 10k but that doesn’t depreciate, and I can go on holidays anytime I like with my young family. In fact my car, which I paid 1500 for first day 2 years ago, will tow that same trailer tent all around Europe without a bother.

And no, it’s not madness as the life expectancy is 25 years and you’d spend 2k on a budget holiday to Spain for 2 weeks with a family of 5 ffs. This way, I can do as I please. On the other hand, had I bought a new car, it would depreciate far more rapidly and would be of limited use.

There is AC, heating, electrics and water. it’s not a tent. it’s a folding camper. I use the term trailer tent for simplicity. It actually folds up into a trailer so nor do you have storage costs, insurance costs, annual tax, servicing, NCT or customs to worry about. You would with a normal camper, particularly if imported.

There is no mandatory balloon payment at the end of your PCP contract. I looked into this 2 years ago, but the limits on millage did no suit me. You have 3 options at the end of a PCP contract:
    1. You trade in your car, and use it as a deposit for a brand new car on PCP.
    2. You buy the car outright, the balloon payment option.
    3. You hand the car back, and walk away debt free. But you have lost the money you already spent on the car.
I was told this by a VW and a Ford garage in April 2014.

I drive my second car with pcp and love it. I’m not saying go and get it as its maybe not for everyone but works great for me. Think about it as a bill / not as an asset. Same as you have electricity at home but you don’t own power plant. Same as you use bus or train but you don’t own it. Why would I need to own the car? It’s a tool / Service for me. And having said that – you can own the car with pcp – if your intention is to pay the balloon. So it’s quite flexible to be honest.

It works for some ppl it doesn’t for others cause of the milage restrictions but nobody will be on the bread line in 3 years because of a Pcp deal

Apart from a small amount of tax take ( €752m, how much of that is made up of the ridiculous VRT?) and the wages of a few car salesmen what benefit is it for us?

They’re likely all bought on credit sucking money out of the economy in real terms as every one of them is manufactured elsewhere.

Also, if you bought a second hand car in 2010-2015, there is a very good chance that car came in from the UK, as there were not enough new cars bought in Ireland in from 2008-2013 to meet the current demand of the second hand market. So, we were actually putting money into the UK economy that would normally be spent in the Irish economy. With the increase in new car sales, this means we will not have to import so many second hand cars in 2-3 years.

As if people had a choice? Car dealers depends on this fear mongering mentality. Car tax is a joke I agree but when I see people spending 10s of thousands on new car to avoid paying a 300-400 euro a year less , that is crazy. Yes the NCT is a pain but once every 2 years on 10 year old car, a minor inconvenience at best . Also this fear of insurers not covering old cars – bar the usual rip off merchants like Aviva and the likes there a still loads of old car on the road today cause the are loads of companies insuring old cars – kencco, 123.ie and so on.

You will rarely lose more money faster than the depreciation of driving a new car out of the forecourt . As lovely a new car is , the novelty always seems to wear off sooner than the debt is paid

People always play the begrudgery card as soon as they start hearing opinions they don’t like . Most over used word around here .. The word your looking for exasperation, you can underestimate people’s vanity .. The car dealerships are can hardly believe their luck people are queuing up to pay hundreds of euro a month to “rent” a car .

Money people have actually no idea what PCP is, or how it works. As you say Eircodes, it’s not a loan at all.

Didn’t understand what happened I guess. We have seen car sales increase more times without an economic crash than with a crash. The crash was the strange thing so all spending does not mean a crash happens.

the crash wasn’t a strange thing the banks gave people money too easily, the people took it very willingly, and the government blew all it’s money out the door first chance it got. the only problem is people are very quick to blame the banks and government for the role they played but not to put up their own hand and say I was part of the problem, and between the amount of new cars being bought the last few years and the rise in house prices it signs of it all kicking off again.

€439 Million from Car Tax goes to fund Water Services.

Water charges should be funded by general taxation or metered usage (with allowance for inability to pay) BUT NOT by pre-2008 car owners who have to bear the brunt of Car Tax typically 3 times new car owners tax €710 v €280.
Lower socio – economic group subsidising those who can afford new cars … not a recipe for stability ..

Regressive taxes like the daft Irish Car Tax Law passed by FF, create social and political unrest … more on the way …

Why then with so many new SAFER cars are the insurance companies still sending insurance premiums through the roof? Why it’s because new cars don’t make roads safer they don’t drive it’s the moron at the wheel

Insurance premiums are through the roof due to the compensation payouts in this country. Its the legal system that is the root cause of high insurance here.

With certain insurance companies not insuring cars 14 years or older even though they have a Valid NCT,Can the government not do anything about these companies refusing to insure people’s car. After all if the car has a valid NCT which is required by law I don’t see why insurance companies should be refusing people insurance.

Taken from the Citizens information site:

If you are refused motor insurance
Individual insurers have the right to refuse you cover, but they must provide you with a reason for the refusal should you ask for one. However, even though you have been refused cover, you are entitled to go to the Declined Cases Committee of Insurance Ireland who will obtain an insurance quotation for you. In order for the Committee to consider your case you must first have sought and been refused quotations in writing from at least three insurers.
