The 5 at 5 5 stories, 5 minutes, 5 o’clock.

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie bring you five stories you really should check out by 5pm.

1. #MARKETS: It’s been a day of mixed messages from the world’s financial markets, as investors respond to the US debt downgrade in an unusual way… by increasing their demand for US bonds. The costs of borrowing for governments around the world – including Spain, Italy and Ireland – have fallen, but it’s been yet another miserable day on stock markets.

2. #WATERFORD Sergeant Martha McEnery has been found guilty of assault as the trial of four Waterford-based gardaí draws to a close. On Friday two gardaí were found guilty on charges relating to the same incident, while one garda was found not guilty.

3. #AIR TRAFFIC: There could be more air travel chaos on the cards. German air traffic controllers, who were due to go on strike last week until a court issued an injunction stopping them, will down tools for six hours at 5am Irish time. Flights to and from Germany will be affected, as will any flight that would ordinarily fly through German airspace.

4. #SCRUPLES: 32 TDs have returned over €120,000 in expenses they were given in 2010, but which they never actually incurred. The TDs had been given the expenses in advance because they opted not to ‘vouch’ for their claims – but, having not spent the cash given to them, have refunded it to the taxpayer. Education minister Ruairí Quinn is top of the returns list, giving back almost €15,000.

5. #BISCUITS: The company which manufactures some of Ireland’s favourite biscuits has been sold, in a move which brings many of Ireland’s best-known food brands under one roof. Jacob Fruitfield, which makes cream crackers, Mikado, Kimberley and Coconut Creams, is to be bought by Valeo Foods which already runs Odlums, Roma, Erin and Bachelors Beans.

Met two guards on bikes while driving through waterford in 2008 ,one of them tried to pass me on the inside nearest the kerb and banged angrily on the car window scaring the life out my 4 year old in the back. The ignorant arsehole told me to leave enough room for cyclists to over take on the inside .When i told him that it was illegal to overtake on the inside and that he should know better he lost it .
I pulled over to see if he had damaged my car and challenged him about banging on the car and scaring my wife and child and did he think it was a good idea to come up on a car on the inside like a car jacker what with all the crime going on.
He shit his pants when i asked him for his name and number ,his pal joined in with the stupid ass saying i nearly crushed him, i asked them both what would you do if you saw any road user overtake on the inside. They hadn’t any answer , i told them both that they were a poor example for cyclists and should take some more traffic courses in templemore , two of them cycled off with tails between legs suitably chastened. There are a lot of good cops and a lot a stupid ones these two were the worst i have met ,i don’t doubt for a minute if had in any way been aggressive they would have kicked the shit out of me for nothing other than the fact that i was smarter than them . Guards are citizens too i am glad these guards are going to be prosecuted.

Fair play to you Anthony. I had a pretty much the same problem in Wexford only I did report them. The desk sargent called the next day to say he had spoken to them and did I want to take it further. I said no but I was very glad it was taken seriously. The good cops sometimes need a hand with the bad cops too, it seems.

Yeah guys one time a guard gave out to me for s*** driving but I wasn’t able to take it so I acted the tough guy and I was way smarter than them, they bowed down and crawled away from me in shame.
I think guards are bad because nobody should tell me what to do…
